Yamaha FC5 Sustain Foot Switch Review

This pedal works fine, it came standard with my Yamaha DGX620. As I use it on carpet, it slides around way too much. Not sure how it would be on a hardwood floor or maybe with a rubber mat, but I will be upgrading it to a bigger pedal. Nothing more annoying than when you're playing a beautiful song and have to fiddle with your feet to move the pedal back to where you need it! Plus, if you're used to using a standard piano pedal, it does feel different. But, the advantage is it lessens foot/leg fatigue as you don't need to have your foot off the floor, you can literally use your toe to press it.

A compact version of the FC4, the FC5 performs similar to an acoustic piano's sustain pedal providing expression and feeling to any performance. The FC5 can also be used as a hands-free on/off switch for activating effects or even recording. Works with any keyboard utilizing a sustain pedal with a 1/4" connector.

Yamaha MOTIF XS7 Music Production Synthesizer Review

My first workstation was a Roland W-30, for the time it was pretty good. Then I got a Korg Triton Pro, perfect for my needs in the late 90's on, and I still have it. I still have it, but I don't use it. After I bought the Motif XS I stopped using the Korg because it sounds so cheap next to this. I couldn't see spending another $800 for the XF7, I don't sample that much. The XS does everything that I need and more. If you're more into rap & hip hop, give the Roland fantom G a try. If you like real sounding piano's, guitars etc... then this is the one you need. Yamaha MOTIF XS7 Music Production Synthesizer

88-KEY Portable Educational Keyboard Review

88-KEY Portable Educational Keyboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Great value, and a marked improvement over the old 500 and 505 models. The speakers produce a richer sound tone, and the display window is much clearer and easier to read. Additional features over the 505 include one-touch "auto-accompaniment", where you can try different background rhythms to your recorded notes (jazz, rock, salsa, etc) at a single touch of a button. There are a few more voices to choose from, and the "sweet" sounds are more realistic than on the old models. The unit looks better as a whole, being a sleek silver instead of a dull plastic beige. Also, the controls are a lot more "touch friendly", especially the selection "spin wheel" that lets you choose features much faster than the older models did.
Connectivity is much simpler than on the 500, requiring only a simple USB cord instead of a special MIDI cord.
The one downside of this keyboard is that a USB drive is the only portable media compatible with this unit, and unfortunately they place the plug-in port in the back, which make it somewhat difficult to reach over and plug the drive in while you're trying to play and select. Because of this, I take away a star, and hope that in their next model, Yamaha will put the USB port somewhere in FRONT where it's easy to reach and plug the drive.
I actually recommend this unit over the DGX 620 (Yamaha's highest available model at the time of this review). All features are exactly the same on the two models, except the keys in the 620 are weighted to as close to a real piano as you'll get. Yamaha calls them 'Graded Hammer Standard' keys.
The 520 does not have the GHS keys, but the trade-off (besides a considerably lower cost than the 620) is a lot of weight...the 620 unit as a whole weighs 19 lbs more than the 520 unit. So if you're a traveling musician like me and have to load and unload your keyboard all the time carrying your instrument to your gigs, you're actually much better off with the 520. Get the 620 only if you want a more realistic feel and don't want to move the keyboard a lot.
Overall, an excellent instrument...and if you have any of the older models, I highly recommend an upgrade!

M-Audio AXIOM 61 Advanced 61-Key Semi-Weighted USB MIDI Controller 9900-51413-10 Review

M-Audio AXIOM 61 Advanced 61-Key Semi-Weighted USB MIDI Controller 9900-51413-10
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
MIDI controllers are often a subjective choice because not everyone uses them for the same purpose or has the experience of playing on weighted keys such as your normal piano.
I purchased this after having started with a 49 key M-Audio Key Studio which was an entry level controller with plain, non weighted keys and no extra control beyond the standard pitch & mod wheels and octave buttons. I wanted something that would allow comfortable "piano style" two handed play without getting into actual 88 key units. If you are not experienced with actual keyboards/workstations (the ones that have sound and sequencers on-board like the Fantom, Motif, Triton) then you will likely be surprised with the weight of the unit. It is not heavy per se, but if your prior experience is with a small drum pad or controller with non-weighted keys the 11 pounds will be something of a shock.
The key action is exactly what I was looking for. It gives you enough resistance to feel the play style without actually being heavy enough to wear out your hands like a piano can do. The adjustable velocity curves let you pick how hard you want to have to press a key to achieve set input level which is a nice way to customize the board to how strong your fingers and hands are. I found the action to be smooth and not as sloppy as the thin non-weighted keys I was used to.
The sliders feel slightly flimsy, think hollow plastic, but they ride on a slider bed that offers some resistance so they don't flop around. Not a big deal unless you are used to working with metal sliders. The endless rotary knobs have a good feel to them and look to be very useful.
The drum pads have a soft feel to them but they use switches under them that require fairly centered strikes to trigger the pad. I also own a KORG padKontrol that I use for my pad needs and it is a much better unit, with pads that don't require a direct center hit to trigger and also have a surface which is not as prone to letting your fingers slide. The KORG though is a $200 unit that has only pads and is focused around their use. The Axiom 61 has pads as more of an afterthought or convenience, they are not either numerous enough nor of sufficient quality to be a feature for this unit. They are handy to trigger things while playing the keyboard but not as a drum pad, which is what some folks believe they are getting.
The LCD display is very clear and bright making reading it no problem. I'd prefer if they would have inclined the face of it about 10 degrees towards the user though for even better reading ease.
The included software was of no use to me, I use Logic Studio 8. The lack of a printed manual was disappointing considering that you really need to read through it to understand how to use the various functions. It will typically be plug and play for the keyboard, pitch and mod wheels but the sliders, knobs and pads will require some assignment in almost all software.
Overall I am pleased with the Axiom 61. The keys are very nice as long as you understand they are not hammer-action piano keys. Between the sliders, knobs and pads I would say the knobs are the best implemented "accessory" feature with the sliders and pads coming off as usable but not anything to brag about. If you are getting started and want a good all-in-one solution wither this model or the 49 key Axiom will fill the bill nicely. The controls function properly but as mentioned above if you are into drum pads I'd only use these until you can get a stand alone unit.
I can see how someone who is not really sure what they are getting, could give it a 3 for the lack of a manual and the so-so accessory MIDI knobs/sliders/pads. I only wanted the 61 semi-weighted keys so everything else was not a deal breaker for me. If the knobs/sliders/pads had blown me away with their quality and there was a printed manual I'd have given it a 5 but I'm going to stick with a 4. It does what I bought it for very well and the extras work and do not detract from it.

The Axiom 61 is an advanced 61-key USB mobile MIDI controller with semi-weighted action and assignable aftertouch. Eight rubberized trigger pads are ideal for creating drum tracks and firing samples. Nine sliders and eight endless rotary encoder knobs put you in total control of your software studio. There are also 15 MIDI-assignable buttons—including six transport controls—assignable wheels, foot pedals and more. Programming is a breeze with dedicated front-panel keypad and backlit LCD screen. 20 memory locations store your setups and the free Enigma editor/librarian software lets you manage an unlimited number on your computer.

Total MIDI Control and Playability

Get Into the Action The Axiom series of mobile USB MIDI controllers has everything it takes to get the most from your MIDI software and hardware. Semi-weighted action complete with aftertouch gives you great feel and expression for both synth parts and pianistic passages. Eight rubberized trigger pads put your drums at your fingertips for programming with feel--or easy fire samples or visual effects.
Total MIDI Control Assign the eight rotary encoders to mixer controls like panning and effects sends, or to any synth parameters you want to control. Map the nine sliders to software mixer faders or drawbars on your virtual organ. 15 buttons, pitch and mod wheels, and sustain and expression pedal jacks round out a tour de force of MIDI domination. Assigning controllers is simple, yet has the power to let you delve as deep as you want. Each controller can map to just about any applicable parameter in the MIDI spec, including independent channel addressing for each. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.
Intuitive Front-Panel Programming M-Audio Axiom MIDI controllers all feature a large backlit LCD screen for visual feedback--and the 61-key and 49-key models also place a 10-key pad right on the front panel for direct, intuitive programming. You'll also find 9 dedicated front-panel function buttons to easily access common operations like preset / program change or MIDI channel +/-, octave +/-, and transpose +/-. Use the Controller Mute button to prevent parameters from jumping when you change them, for example, then press Snapshot to transmit all current settings. 20 non-volatile memory locations instantly save and recall your favorite presets--and you can manage an entire preset library on your computer via SysEx dumps and our free Enigma software editor/librarian for PC and Mac.
Mobile Operation The Axiom series is extremely compact and lightweight and all models are powered directly from your computer's USB bus. Choose the size that's best for your needs, then take your music anywhere you want to go.

iLife '11 Family Pack Review

iLife '11 Family Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
DO NOT BUY THIS SOFTWARE UNTIL IT IS FIXED! This pains me to write this. I live in the Applesphere and have for more than 2 decades. I am proud of my Apple computers, devices and software, at least I have been up until now. This review is about iPhoto '11. I've been an iPhoto user since 2005. In 2006 it became my only photo database. I've used versions '05, '06, '07, '09 & now '11. I have almost 17,000 pictures and add over 2000 a year nowadays with a 2 year old around the house. I use iPhoto almost every day. I consider myself an iPhoto expert.
iPhoto '11 is not a good upgrade. If you already have an earlier version of iPhoto, stay with it until Apple can come out with a version of iPhoto '11 (currently iPhoto 9.1) that fixes the issues. I'm only going to mention what I've hit my head against today. I have written feedback to Apple on each of these along with a half dozen other things.
Features eliminated or changed for the worse:
Copy of Edit>Adjust settings has been eliminated
E-mail restricts photos to 8 predesigned Apple formats and restricts file size selection to 2. Text on formats only 3 lines, 74 characters each. Drag & drop to an e-mail results in full file size. Work around is time consuming.
Description area in photo info is limited to showing 2 lines. Cannot select any other size. To put more into box you must type it on outside resource like Word or Pages, then copy & paste.
Search feature now looks for any word (of a group of words) you type versus looking for EVERY word typed. This dramatically decreases it's helpfulness.
Program does not allow you to view two pictures enlarged side by side to compare! This makes editing similar pictures or choosing between several, very difficult as you have to open and then move from one to another.
Full screen view of image impossible!!!
Bugs:
Program hangs up, crashes
Adjusting date and/or time won't resort photos within an event when sorting by date. To see properly sorted after adjusting you have to exit to Events or another folder and then reenter the event.
Places sometimes won't show entries after you select them. To see them to confirm your entry you must either exit the event or quit the program and restart it.
Again, these are only what I have bumped up against today. I wish I had never up(down)graded to this version. Here is what I like, the new card selections are nice. The share, create & add to menus are better.

SKB 88-Note Roto Molded Case with Wheels - 60 x 20 x 5 1/2 Review

SKB 88-Note Roto Molded Case with Wheels - 60 x 20 x 5 1/2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was familiar with this case as I have had other SKB products. Altho it looks flimsy, it's not - it's solid. It has movable inserts that allow you to fit whatever keyboard you need to fit (within case dimensions). The inserts hold my keyboard (KORG TR88) very well. The locks are easy to use and hopefully they will last. The case is lightweight and easy to store.
If I had to redesign anything, it would be to add a second handle on the top (the handle is an actual part of the case so no worry about a plastic or leather one breaking off) and maybe a little bigger set of wheels. I use a separate case for cords, pedals, power supply, ect. so that's not a problem for me but I could see where the addition of an inner compartment for those things might be a help, but there is room for putting these things in the case as it sits. I currently play with 2 separate groups, so this case is going to see some action.
The only reason I give it 4 stars and not 5 would be due to the things I mentioned above about redesigning some things. Unless you enjoy hauling actual road cases around (I gave that stuff up some years ago !!!) this case would work just fine.
