Once I got it i was in love with it, then I realized that a few of the bottom screws were loose, which required me to take out all of the pegs and tighten them, and then re-tune the whole thing.

The Kalimba (or Karimba)is an instrument originally from Africa that is usually played as an accompaniment to vocals, though it can be played on its own, too. It is very easy to play by plucking the keys with both thumbs. It is made of a gourd covered by a piece of wood with the key assembly attached.

African Gourd Kalimba Mbira Thumb Piano Review

African Gourd Kalimba Mbira Thumb Piano
Average Reviews:

This instrument sounds very good but you might have to tune it. I used kalimbamagic.com as a guide. Its very easy to tune but takes some getting used to. In western style music, I find that one has to alternate sides opposite the longest tine. Its musical and mind exercising at the same time.

This Africa Heartwood Project kalimba (kuh-LIM-buh) is the smaller of the two gourd kalimbas available from Ghana, and is better suited for youth-size hands. Also known as a thumb piano, this instrument is derived from the more complex South African mbira, and is played by plucking the keys with the thumbs of each hand whilst holding the gourd body in the palms. The sound created is very melodic and resonant, very "African" sounding. Each key is adjustable so you can tune the instrument according to your preferences by sliding the key in or out. Covered by our satisfaction guarantee, this kalimba features: * Solid wood top mounted on a strong, rounded gourd base * 7-9 adjustable metal keys securely mounted on a metal bridge * One or two holes in the top for amplification and resonance * Durable hand made construction * Imported directly from Ghana * Exact design may vary from photos to include artwork on gourd

The item was shipped way late, and arrived in a box that appeared to have a deep crease in the lid. Fortunately, the thumb piano (kalimba)inside was undamaged. This is a great and soothing modality for someone with essential tremor to relax and be 'in tune'.

Hugh Tracey Treble Kalimba 17-key Treble Kalimba Review

Hugh Tracey Treble Kalimba 17-key Treble Kalimba

(More customer reviews)
I proudly own a Hugh Tracey Treble Kalimba. This is a very fine instrument so don't be put off by it's simple design. It is well worth it's price the minute you hold it & play it for the very first time....the best sounding kalimba on the market....anything else is ,in my opinion, an imitation of it, I know, I bought one of "those" too!!!
You have to play one to know what I'm talking about. A finely crafted product...Do I sound like a commercial??? I sing it's praises, but a Hugh Tracey Kalimba "speaks" for itself!

Hugh Tracey Kalimbas are hand made thumb pianos from South Africa, known the world over for their beautiful tone. These instruments are truly authentic both in construction and sound. The Kalimba - depending on the region also called Thumb Piano, Finger Piano, Mbira, Sanza or Likembe - is a wood box on which a collection of metal strips are mounted. The Kalimba is held in the hand or on the knee and the musician plucks the free hanging strips with the thumb or fingers.

Kalimba, Box, Natural, 12 Keys Review

Kalimba, Box, Natural, 12 Keys
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted to start playing the kalimba so I bought this one, which seemed to be good quality at an affordable price. When I got it, it was severely out of tune, and tuning it in general is very difficult because you have to loosen the bridge with a wrench and then all the tines kind of fall out of place - so there is no retuning one tine without having to tune all of them again. I was disappointed that this box model does not come with sound holes on the bottom to create some vibrato and the wood is not as polished and sanded as I had expected. Overall though, this kalimba is quite playable when you get the tuning down (there are many types of tuning and it will need to be retuned monthly or so) and the sound quality is pretty good.
If you are just starting out on the kailmba and want an affordable model, this is a good pick, but make sure you read up on how to tune and care for the kalimba beforehand so you know what you're getting yourself into. I think I'll move onto a better model once I can play this one pretty efficiently, though.

I received this instrument about 2 days ago. I have been playing for about 7 hours total now. The book is easy to follow, the CD provides help if you can't get the tempo down. This instrument sounds really clear and beautiful. The book also covers everything from maintaining the instrument, tuning(The instrument is already pre-tuned to standard C scale), and chords. I expect this instrument to accompany me a long time . It's worth getting if your a beginner.

I don't know how this instrument sounds as I was sent a cheaper version instead of this one which I ordered for just under $19.00. The one I received was nice enough, but I was disappointed. Be careful to check that they are sending you the correct instrument when you get to check out and that the price isn't around $13.00. Amazon didn't bother to let me know they were making a substitution.

Turtle Shaped Karimba Mbira Thumb Piano Kalimba Finger Review

Turtle Shaped Karimba Mbira Thumb Piano Kalimba Finger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This kalimba sits in our livingroom and when it isn't being used its job is to 'sit pretty'. The 'tines' aren't exactly tuned very carefully, when they move you have to sort of tune it again but it does have a good chimy sound. (When we first got it the sound made my dog think someone rang the doorbell and she'd run to the door!) This is a good 'starter kalimba' for fun, not for the serious percussion music enthusiast.

Kalimba Thumb Piano, Coconut Shell, 7 Keys Review

Kalimba Thumb Piano, Coconut Shell, 7 Keys
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The previous reviewer is right. I've made my own kalimbas or thumb pianos from things around the house - they aren't that hard to make. But this is a good price for a kalimba with a good sound and simple number of keys.
The rewards from playing this instrument are phenomenal when just played with for an hour or two. It seems like it would be a waste of time, but it isn't. You'd be amazed at how fast an hour goes by while plucking the keys in singles and in pairs. The angels will indeed sing you into a much more relaxed and contemplative mood.
Whether you play in the morning to set you at ease before going to work, or play before bed time to set you in the right mood for dreaming, this "toy" is a very powerful mood altering drug. Use it in excess, safely, knowing that the only harm it might do you is sore thumbs and the occasional cracked thumbnail. The benefits are endless.
Eight keys is a minimum. More is better. But any number of 8 or more keys should give you at least one scale to play with.
Aim for a medium pluck - not too hard, and not too soft. Hard makes for harsh noise, but medium plucking will not wear you out and will produce a nice sound. Play the keys beside each other together for variety, or in quick succession as your thumbnail falls off one then the other. It's a fun instrument to experiment with. Have fun getting high on sound and your imagination.

Thumb Piano, Large Review

Thumb Piano, Large
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been playing the Hugh Tracey Kalimba for many years.
I bought a Mid East Kalimba from eBay.
It was advertised as a Hugh Tracey Kalimba and came
in an old Hugh Tracey box. I thought I had gotten a good deal.
In the picture it looks exactly the same.
The first thing I noticed different was the paint on the tines.
It was a more of a translucent color. I thought it had been
repainted (and kind of a sloppy job at that).
The next thing I noticed, as soon as I took it out the box
was that it was a much heavier wood. It did not have the light
feel of the Hugh Tracey models which are made from an exotic,
resonant Kiaat wood. This thing was thick.
It looked very pretty though.
The big disappointment came when I started to play the instrument.
First off, it was out of tune. I had a rough time trying to tune
this beast. With the Hugh Tracey models, I just wiggle the tines
side to side or use a coin to push the tines.
The tines don't move easily on this Mid East Beast... Damn!
Unless you know what you are doing, you won't be
able to get this thing in tune. It's very difficult.
After fighting with it for almost an hour, I finally got it tuned.
The sound is OK but kind of tinny (if that's a word).
It doesn't have the full, deeper sound of the Hugh Tracey.
It's probably because the tines are thicker.
It doesn't have the mellow tamber nor maintain the sustain.
I also notice the edges of the tines are not smooth.
It's a little rough on your thumbnails.
You probably should sand them down some to smooth it out.
All in all, it looks pretty but not much fun to play.
I would never buy another one
(and wish I could get my money back).
You'd be much better off with a Hugh Tracey Model.
They come tuned, don't scratch your thumbnails
and give you a much fuller, more mellow sound.

Kalimba. Origin Country: Pakistan. 2.1 lbs. Made by Mid-East.
Rosewood thumb piano, 5" x 7", 17 steel keys and two vibrato holes on the back. The thumb piano originates in Africa. It is also known as the mbira or likembe. The metal keys are mounted on a wooden box that acts as the resonating chamber. To play, rest the thumb piano on the fingers of both hands and hold it between your palms. Cover the vibrato holes with your fingers. Then pluck the keys with your thumbs. As you play you can un-cover and cover the vibrato holes as you like. Many different tunings are acceptable, according to personal preference. Specific tuning of a thumb piano is only an issue when two instruments are played together; then they should generally agree in tuning. Otherwise, the tuning is subjective and should only be pleasing to the player. The longer keys have lower pitches and shorter keys have higher pitches. The keys can be adjusted by tapping them in or out to adjust their length, and therefore their pitch.
