Rosewood thumb piano, 3" x 5", 8 steel keys. The thumb piano originates in Africa. It is also known as the mbira or likembe. The metal keys are mounted on a wooden box that acts as the resonating chamber. Longer keys have lower pitches and shorter keys have higher pitches. The keys can be adjusted by tapping them in or out to adjust their pitch. Many different tunings are acceptable, according to personal preference. Similar tuning is only an issue when two instruments are played together; then they should generally agree in tuning.

(More customer reviews)I don't know how this instrument sounds as I was sent a cheaper version instead of this one which I ordered for just under $19.00. The one I received was nice enough, but I was disappointed. Be careful to check that they are sending you the correct instrument when you get to check out and that the price isn't around $13.00. Amazon didn't bother to let me know they were making a substitution.

(More customer reviews)This kalimba sits in our livingroom and when it isn't being used its job is to 'sit pretty'. The 'tines' aren't exactly tuned very carefully, when they move you have to sort of tune it again but it does have a good chimy sound. (When we first got it the sound made my dog think someone rang the doorbell and she'd run to the door!) This is a good 'starter kalimba' for fun, not for the serious percussion music enthusiast.
