Modartt Pianoteq PLAY Review

Modartt Pianoteq PLAY
Average Reviews:

Amazing sounding and performing pianos. I chose to buy it on Amazon as it was $10 less than then manufacturer's site. I downloaded the demo before buying (time limit and some keys are disabled), but I knew instantly that this was a great set of virtual pianos. There's great nuance captured in these settings and they haven't let me down. I use them as VST plug-ins for Logic Pro 9 and the easily mix well and don't use much processing power at all. One feature I really enjoy is the ability to set your polyphony. If you wanted, you could have 256 notes at your disposal. No complaints! Works super well on Mac OS X 10.6.5. Recommended for people looking for realistic piano sounds with great performance features. Please note, you need a decent sound card (w/ ASIO drivers) and a MIDI controller of some sort.

GenieSoft Score Writer 4 Review

Score writer 4 is an awesome computer sheet music program! I was throughly suprised just how easy and fun it was. In the first evening that I got it, I picked it up completely. Before, I was sketching out my music by hand and playing each note out on my piano to see how it sounded. It took long hours and was very tedious. Then, I'd have to get the ruler out and try my best note by note to rewrite my messy sketch. Now at the touch of a button you can add notes, groups, articulations, expressions, and so much more. You can also set up your score on a variety of instruments. It also plays your composition back for you perfectly. And it comes out as high quality professional sheet music!! I was never really good at the specifics of writing pieces before thats why this has really helped me. I didn't have the kind of money to purchase those high expensive programs like Overture, but once I saw this I thought I'd give it a try. I was so pleased by it that I'd rather spend my time and money on this easy program, than have to spend hours reading a manual learning how to use a higher program. It really has everything you need to put in a composition. If you have any worries about it I guarantee the minute you try it they will all disappear! I would highly recommend it to anyone who just wants to throw the cd in and be jump started on their way to making a masterpiece.

Music Games (Jewel Case) Review

Music Games (Jewel Case)

A colorful, fun program for beginning students, especially for piano students. Includes activities to practice your existing knowledge of names of the piano keys, note names on the treble and bass staff, C major and G major scales, melodic intervals, musical terms, and counting in 4/4 or 3/4 time. No music theory instruction is given - just practice what you already know. The packaging I saw recommended for ages 7+, which seems about right; students using this software will need to be able to read (the directions are not spoken). Very affordable!

Acoustica Pianissimo Virtual Grand Piano Review

Acoustica Pianissimo Virtual Grand Piano
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are in need of a Virtual Grand Piano which can be used in live performance, I believe this is your best bet. I have tried many software pianos. Most of the free ones just don't have enough depth or expressiveness. And the Gigapianos are totally impracticle. Large sampled piano libraries that have to be constantly streamed from the hard drive can be far too CPU intensive and therefore too risky to be dependable for a live gig. The newest generation of virtual pianos has addressed this by combining sampling, modeling and morphing technology. The libraries are smaller in size and the marraige of these technologies has really trimmed the demand on the CPU. Best of all it has produced a richer more natural feeling, sounding and playing experience. The three top contenders in this category are Acoustica Pianissimo, 4 Front Truepianos, and Modartt Pianoteq. I have tried them all. And though they are all quality instruments, I feel that Pianissimo is the clear winner on sound and playability, alone. The fact that it is by far and away the most inexpensive is just a wonderful bonus. Try the demo versions of these pianos for yourself. I think you'll agree.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Acoustica Pianissimo Virtual Grand Piano

Acoustica's Pianissimo is a virtual instrument that uses a combination of sample playback and advanced physical modeling to create a stunning acoustic grand piano sound. Starting with 250MB of high quality samples of a Steinway Model D grand piano, the Pianissimo plug-in uses complex signal processing and programming to recreate the warmth, response, and playability of a real grand piano. This natural sound is then paired with a professional studio-quality reverb algorithm to add the depth and ambiance of a true acoustic space. Add in modeled sympathetic resonance, incidental mechanical hammer sounds, remarkable control over tone and velocity response, 256 voices of polyphony, and incredibly low CPU usage, and Pianissimo might just be the best sounding, most playable virtual piano you've experienced. The VSTi plug-in will operate in any DAW with support for virtual instruments in the VSTi format, including Mixcraft. The standalone version supports any MIDI device, and any WAV, ASIO, or WaveRT device. It allows for two-track recording, loading, and saving of standard MIDI Type 1 files, and supports mixing down to WAV, MP3, WMA, and Ogg Vorbis files.

My Piano for PC/Mac Review

I had very high hopes for this software. My almost 7 year old daughter is very excited about learning to play piano. But I guess she doesn't watch enough cartoons because she and I both find the talking piano character a little ridiculous. But that's not the problem. The problem is that the volume for the narration cannot be adjusted separately from the midi keyboard output through the computer speakers. Our keyboard does not have internal amplification. (MIDI only) so there is no option to adjust keyboard output. This makes the software all but unusable for us. We had high hopes but it looks like we'll have to look for another solution.

Piano for Kids (Jewel Case) Review

Piano for Kids (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

This is a first-stage beginner's program with an excellent presentation. The cute characters provide a very good education about piano basics and how to play the piano. For the software version, screen animations provide a level of interest for kids. Recommended for age 6+, but I believe it could start younger for those that can read a little. The software version features printable sheet music, tempo adjustments, puzzles, games, and an option to download other free MIDI songs (but on Windows Vista with a broadband (cable internet) connection, this option did not work). SelectSoft/ArcMedia's website also did not produce a listing for free MIDI music downloads. If the download MIDI songs function works for you, this would be an excellent choice for long-term teaching. Piano for Kids (Jewel Case) Piano for Kids

This is just the first one-third of their Piano and Keyboard Method package. It covers the basics of rhythm and reading music. If you're serious about really learning in this manner, you should probably just get the Piano and Keyboard Method version right away. If you're just dabbling and need some help learning to keep time and read music, this is a great place to start (you'll need a MIDI keyboard to get the most out of it). But if you already have a good sence of rhythm and know the basics of reading music, this wont offer too much.

Piano Wizard PREMIER Piano Instruction Software - USB/MIDI Review

Piano Wizard PREMIER Piano Instruction Software - USB/MIDI
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
a little background, i am a 22 year old woman with learning disabilities. i have a lot of difficulty reading and writing so when i wanted to learn piano i was worried because i couldnt afford lessons and learning from a book required a ton of reading.. im very easily distracted, just like a child.. i learn best with color.
first off:
piano wizard=awesome
second.. um, well.. its fun..
third.. everyone should have piano wizard
forth.. piano wizard company is evil for requiring registration on the internet for the product to be usable.. what if a person doesnt even have internet in their house? well i guess its not evil, but its annoying.. ive never seen another software that did that, not even my expensive rosetta stone japanese.. its especially a pain in the butt when the computer only has one bar of wireless internet.. really irritating.. but whatever i guess they are scared that people, um, im not sure what they are scared of.. but im sure its something..
5th.. no matter how excited you are your dog will never care that you got a 100% at the right tempo for a new song you have just learned.. he will sit there and stare at you as you dance around in your seat your victory dance..
6th.. start out in step 2.. its easier to learn the sideways layout faster if your brain doesnt have to turn.. well, start out there once you make it past old mcdonald..
7th.. boy im just going on and on with this numbering thing.. the dinosaur layout has the easiest to see flying thing shape, an egg, this is the best one because when fingering is activated you can clearly see the number without blocking the color while you still need color.. a lot of the others just become hard to read if you have poor eyes like me
8th.. songs make way more sense when you get up to level 3 and they show how some notes are supposed to be for longer (because during levels 1-2 you are learning fingering but in level 3 you can see real notes and so if you have even a tiny bit of knowledge about how the circle ones are longer your song will sound waaaay better)
9th.. well if you read 8th you might be under the impression that you cant see how long the notes are until level 3.. well if you choose to you can select the long flying thing and see them in level 1-2.. it will get longer for how long the notes are but i dont use it because it makes it a lot harder to see when there are multiple notes back to back for the same key..
10th.. songs in easy mode are lame, but they are truly the best for for each skill level.. any downloaded songs should wait until you have mastered the 100 songs at the proper tempo
11th thing to say about PW is that stretchy gloves with the tips cut off make it a lot easier to play in a 50 degree house..
12th.. well i wish there was sheet music for each song.. but i suppose if i really wanted to i could look it up
13th thing to say.. I AM A PIANO,,,, um WITCH!.. i dont think i can be a wizard since im a woman..
14th,, this is definitely not a stand alone product.. i think a book that teaches about the different notes and maybe some youtube lessons work well with it..
15th, i wish it could play through my keyboard speakers instead of my laptop.. meh
16th.. not everything is set up like it is in the how to videos but the real way its set up is easier anyway so whatever right?
17th.. the stickers do not impede the functionality of my lighted keyboard when not connected to the computer.. they are see through enough that the light shines through enough.. the black key stickers are not bright enough so be sure to practice in a well lit room.. one lamp may not be enough but its not a big deal because after a while when you are learning a song you stop looking at the keys all together..special note, the height of your regular computer desk may be too high for proper posture playing.. its harder to keep the wrists up when the desk is much higher than your elbows..now one thing i hate that i havent figured out how to turn off, is that line that connects the musical note to the piano key.. this makes it hard to see which line the note is on on the staff.. its really really annoying and it hurts the learning process for learning to read the music when everything is black and white.. honestly at that point i think i would rather they get rid of the keyboard for an even more challenging level where you are just playing the notes as they hit a line instead of keys.. maybe one day they will put a new level in that does that.. maybe they wont.. ((ETA: i have figured out how to turn off that weird line))
one more bad thing, it doesnt take off if you hit the keys out of order if they are close together.. and you can totally mash keys for a perfect score if you get frustrated enough.. sort of like in tekken 2, you could win any fight my mashing keys..
one more bad thing, the sound quality is awful.. but um, i dont actually care that much.. so whatever right.. but if you do care about sound it is best to note that.. i think its probably the midi files the songs are on's fault..
um if you are having trouble getting the stickers on right (like if you have a bigger keyboard and arent sure which areas get stickers) go into free play mode and hit keys to see which color they are then put the correct sticker on.. easy peasy..
havent figured out how to take midi files already on my computer and put them into the premier mode thingy.. i would like to have my cartoon songs on there..
the screen is weird on PW but you can get used to it.. i wish it had a sustain thing so i could learn that instead of holding down keys.. but whatever, and i also wish there was a velocity sensitivity component because you dont play all keys at the same volume when you play a real piano, some are softer and some are louder..
um i recommend starting a new song slowing the tempo down, waaay down.. then working your way up to moving your fingers faster.. it helps with mastering a song faster especially when you switch over to the black and white notes, it helps you have time to hit the correct keys instead of accidentally learning the wrong ones because it wont correct you..
i dont like how it doesnt take off points for pressing the wrong key, but as its made for children i sort of understand, but for an adult constructive criticism is helpful.. i hate when i get a 100% when i know i messed up a couple keys.. it makes me feel like i cheated..
rating:
fun= 5*****
instructive= 4****
sound= 3***
customization capabilities= 5*****
buggyness= 4****
total stars 4.2
i recommend this to any adults with learning disabilities that may otherwise prevent the learning of a musical instrument..

Magix Piano & Keyboard Workshop Review

Magix Piano and Keyboard Workshop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The price of this might lead you to think it's worth a try..but XP users be aware that it does not work -brings up an error screen right at the outset..I've tried it on two machines. If you read the reviews for the version 2, which I have just got, then I would say one star is a little harsh, but then again... the metronome/count in on mine is highly erratic to the extent that it's more of an offputting hindrance than a help - it seems to play an almost random selection of the beats but never the full number for whatever is indicated by the time signiature.. sounds like a 70's jazz rock drummer most of the time! Because of this it's quite difficult/impossible to do the rhythm tests. Also the way the staves are presented on screen could develop bad eye-tracking habits that pass over into your paper copy reading..because it only presents two lines of measures at any one time once the upper line has played through it refreshs the screen with the measures following the bottom on the top.. as a result if your developing the habit of reading ahead as you should be you end up reading above your current position which never happens in the real world.

I bought this Smartscore X Piano Edition after some researches. I'm disappoited. This software can't recognize well if the music is at intermediate or advanced level. As a result, it can't play back well. For example, i have a piece of music called "A Comme Amour." This software recognizes only about 70% correctly. When it played back, it skipped a buch of notes on the left hand. I can't edit and fix it as the editing tools that are available are very limited. If you want a software to recognize and play back a piece of easy music, then this software might be OK.

Soft Way to Mozart software is a set of seven computer games designed to teach beginners from 3-year-old and up how to read and play music, and support practice of beginners and advanced students. Some of the games use the MIDI connection to an electric piano keyboard or digital piano for interactive support and control of student's playing. This teaching software may be used for home practice and self-teaching, or in music studios or at schools. This software package differs from other software1) It really teaches how to read and play music compared to many musical toys designed for entertainment rather than for education.2) Supported by innovative teaching approach, it succeeds in teaching very beginners and children where many teaching software programs rely on the already existing skills of advanced students.Soft Mozart teaching method focuses on the most important part of music education - learning to read music. The method introduces revolutionary music score representations and special key stickers to allow any beginner, small children as well as adults, to read and play songs from the first piano lesson. The interactive learning software guides the student during piano playing, and the gradual transition to a normal music score provides the most effective and painless method of learning to read music notes. A student can choose from 52 (may be updated to 300) popular classical and folk songs that are included in the song library, listen to them, play with the right, left or both hands, and memorize them.Different learning exercises improve essential skills needed for fluent music reading and playing. All exercises are implemented in the form of colorful computer games, attractive to adults as well as toddlers. Total interactivity and visual hints provide a comfortable environment during music activities, playing songs as well as exercises.

Steinberg Grand 3 - The Ultimate Virtual Piano Suite Review

Steinberg Grand 3 - The Ultimate Virtual Piano Suite
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loaded up Grand 3 and was surprised that I was not given the option of storing the samples on my external media drive. The good news is that the samples seem take up a relatively small amount of space but I'm not sure the performance is adequate when the OS, application and samples are all on the same drive. There's probably a way to remedy this however and it did not seem to affect the sound. I use a Macbook Pro with an extra LCD screen for displaying the DAW timeline so performance optimization is important. I have an external firewire 800 drive for storing samples and I'm thinking my next purchase will be a solid state drive to replace my CDROM which would give me more options for optimizing features/performance.
So what about the sound? It was clean and bright (Yamaha grand) but not outstanding to my ear. I would not buy it for $400 but for $100 I would consider adding it to my collection if I didn't already own Synthogy's Ivory collection (Ivory II Grand Pianos and The Italian Grand). The Ivory pianos are so much better to my ear. The test for me is if you sit down and when you play the first note it brings a big smile to your face and then you blow away 2-3 hours before you look up.
Also, when I compared the Ivory Yamaha grand with the Steinberg Yamaha grand I definitely liked the Ivory sound better. Of course Ivory is now more expensive than the Steinberg pianos but as they say, you get what you pay for. The Yamaha P155 digital piano that I have seems every bit as good as Steinbergs Grand 3 samples so there would be no point wasting computer processing power and memory on the samples, save it for the DAW (I use Cubase 6). Ivory on the other hand has perfected Ivory II to the extent that I no longer use the built-in P155 sound unless I'm on the road. Ivory piano recordings sound incredible to my ears. I'm glad I sent the Steinberg product back and purchased Ivory although Cubase 6 contains a trial version of Grand 3 which is a full version that is licensed for two months. A good idea by Steinberg.

This software does pretty much what it claims. It's neither clearly better nor clearly worse than the alternatives. Here are some specific notes which might be helpful to you:
* It's trapped in an un-resizeable DOS window. To get full-screen, you have to alter your monitor settings.
* You can use your QWERTY keyboard to play notes, but you have to reactivate a special window everytime you click elsewhere. Therefor, this feature is useful only for testing the software w/o a MIDI keyboard connected.
* There are about a dozen MIDI songs which you can upload to your MIDI keyboard (if your keyboard allows this). The rest of the songs are integrated into the program -- ie, not copyable.
* Contrary to the advertising, there are no REM songs. There is "Superman", which REM covered but did not write. (Good song though.)
* If you press "next" too early, you do not get credit for having viewed a lesson. This is good for a classroom, but annoying to me.
* I have gotten weird errors from the Music Recorder, but I didn't buy it for that anyway.I bought Piano Suite 1 & 2, which is much cheaper. It contains only 80 songs and lacks the Composer (which also prints sheet music). For me it is a much better value than the Premier edition. It has all the lessons, the games, and the same basic player.
