I debated between this, the SP250, Yamaha P85, and the Casio PX-130/330. After trying the Casios and not liking to sound of them, and deciding that the SP250 was a bit expensive and heavy, I had a hard time deciding between the SP170 and P85. Both are excellent and have similar features. The SP170 is a little cheaper and looks a bit sleaker. The P85 has a couple extra functions (like layering and a metronome). I chose the SP170 and have been very happy with my decision. All 10 voices sound great, the speakers are plenty loud, and the keys feel very good, like a real piano. I bought mine online in a "bundle" and am very satisfied with all components.
There are no buttons on the keyboard (just a volume and on/off switch on the back). I was worried that changes voices would be a pain, and while it is slightly awkward, it really is not a big deal. I just wish there was a way to tell if reverb and chorus were on or off.
An excellent digital piano for the price!

Yamaha DGX230 76 Full-Sized Piano Style Keys, 489 Instrument Voices Review

I now own two these. One I leave at my band's practice site, the other I keep at home and then take with me for performances. At $200 there's no sense hauling the practice instrument back and forth. Of course, it's not a professional keyboard and will rate sneers from real keyboardists. But for my purposes providing chording and some embellishments for a couple of local bands, it works just fine . . . especially great sound for the "rock organ" setting . . . and I also use the violin voice for country songs and the various saxophone voices on occasion. I have no idea about the other features of the keyboard as a learning device . . . but for an inexpensive, good-sounding, sturdy and dependable keyboard, it's great.

If you're looking for a reasonably priced piano replacement, look no further than the DGX-230. It is the music student or professional musicians answer to I need more keys! and many music teachers encourage new students to get a keyboard that will grow with their needs. It features 76 non-weighted keys that not only look like piano keys but have a Graded Soft Touch (GST) action with different levels of resistance, making it easier for a budding musician to move to an acoustic or digital piano. The DGX-230 delivers on its piano theme with a special mode of fingering called Full Keyboard Mode. This allows the player to play the keyboard like a piano; for example a chord with the right hand and bass notes with the left. When using the accompaniment feature, the virtual band will follow these chords. Traditional portable keyboards normally require you to chord on the left side of the keyboard, in the bass section, which is foreign to most piano players. The DGX-230 is also capable of this mode, for those who prefer it.The DGX230 has 30 built-in songs plus 70 more on included CD-ROM for you to learn to play using the Yamaha Education Suite. The songs are separated into left and right hand parts, providing 7 levels of lessons plus a convenient chord dictionary.Imagine capturing your childs first performance or writing and recording your own songs. With the DGX-230, you have the equivalent of a built-in multi-track recorder to record one or multiple instrument parts at a time and assign each part to a different track. Six tracks are provided to accommodate sophisticated melodies, chord accompaniment and rhythm parts. The DGX-230 comes with 30 built-in songs plus 70 more on an included CD-ROM and an interactive lesson system, divided into left and right hand parts, for learning them. In addition, you have the ability to connect to a computer via USB, download more songs from the Internet into the internal Flash ROM (PC only), and use all of the Yamaha Education Suite features to help you learn to play them. Yamaha makes it easy to get connected with the new PC button. Now, instead of wading through function menus and fighting through a maze of selections, one button is your expressway to music on the web and your computer. In addition, once connected, you can play your songs into the computer (PC and Mac), edit them if necessary, and e-mail them to your friends and family. And with General MIDI (GM) and XGlite compatibility, song data always plays back with the correct sounds.Master EQ: Tailor your sound Five different master equalizer (EQ) settings are provided to give you the best possible sound when listening through different reproduction systems-the instruments internal speakers, headphones, or an external speaker system. Casio PX830 Privia Digital Piano, Black Review

Casio PX830 Privia Digital Piano, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this for my daughter who's learning piano and yearning for a "real" one. This sounds and feels like a grand. The parts were packaged and padded securely. It arrived safe and sound even though there was a rip and a hole in the box.
Took me a while to put everything together. The instructions were detailed enough, but it was not in the first page of the manual, so you have to look for it, and read everything first before you start. During assembly, I found that most screws on the piano body were not sufficiently fastened, a few were almost ready to fall out! That didn't incite any confidence in its assembly work. And, the unit did not have a sticker with serial number, nor was one on the box! Can't explain why.
But overall, it plays well, sounds good. And let's hope it doesn't break down! If not for the issues above I would have given it a five stars.
A couple more things. The black wood was faux wood particle board, and looked cheap. I couldn't tell from the photos, and had expected gloss black (like a real piano). Also, even with the lid/cover down, the keys are still exposed on the front side. Instead of having a narrow folding board to cover the front side (again, like many real pianos), it gives you a little stopper to put in the middle so the cover board won't warp. I have to say, this can only make it look "cheap". Not sure if I was expecting too much.

The Casio PX830 BK Privia Digital Piano is focused on pure piano playing. That starts with the refined matt keys (ivory touch) with a pleasing playing action. The hammer and repeating action on the keys is just as luxurious as the 128-tone AiF sound source with Linear Morphing for dynamic sound behavior. The minimalist design provides a perfect counterpoint to the extraordinary wealth of sound. The 'Black Polish" variant provides the PX-830 with an especially refined look.

World Tour Deluxe Padded Keyboard Bench Review

World Tour Deluxe Padded Keyboard Bench

I'm petite so I'm delighted that this stool has 6 options for height adjustment. I was able to get it high enough for me. The padding is soft and comfortable to sit on. It's light enough to carry around. I also like it that it can be folded away for storage if I ever need to. It is also stable enough, though I wouldn't recommend rocking on it or standing on it.

I liked the size but didn't realize that I can't play it with earphones which I had wanted. One of the keys didn't work properly so sent it back for a refund and had no problem with the vendor that way. They were courteous.

Pianoforall - The Ingenious New Way to Learn Piano & Keyboard Review

Pianoforall - The Ingenious New Way to Learn Piano and Keyboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the review I wrote to Robin shortly after starting the program. A year or so later and my opinion has not changed.
"Robin: I have to tell you I absolutely LOVE your program. I am on page 56 of Book 1 and I simply cannot believe how easy it is to follow.
Admittedly, I can read music so I'm sure that helps a lot, BUT, I have already memorized the chords so far, completely understand the concepts of changing to maj7 and 7th, minors to majors, etc. I went back and looked at the chord books I had from my "traditional" lessons and tried to do the same thing from those books and I simply COULD NOT understand what they were trying to get me to do.
I know I haven't gone far yet but I had to share with you now my excitement and enthusiasm with your program. I'm probably practicing two to three hours a day four times a week and just love it. I have my laptop right by my piano and I haven't moved it back to my desk since I downloaded your program.
Anyway, thanks again for a wonderful product and bringing back my enthusiam for learning.
(later update)
..by all means, you are welcome to use my comments -- frankly, that's what prompted me to try you, it's what people were saying. I can be pretty cynical and sometimes wonder if these "marketing" comments are just made up -- but believe me, after using this program, I know that they were sincere comments by people who have in fact tried the program. Best to you, Eldora."

It's never been easier to learn Piano or KeyboardImagine being able to sit down at a piano and just PLAY - Pop, Blues, Jazz, Ragtime, Ballads, even incredible Classical pieces? Now you can.. and you can do it in months not years! Imagine you could learn piano or keyboard without having to spend money, time and effort on traditional Piano Lessons. The Pianoforall Process is simple..You start with Popular Chord based Rhythm Style Piano (think of artists like Elton John, Billy Joel, Lennon & McCartney, Barry Mannilow, Lionel Ritchie, Coldplay, Norah Jones and so on) which is EASY but sounds amazingly like the 'real thing'. This enables you to achieve a professional sound almost immediately. Once you are sounding great and having a whole lot of fun (which motivates you to learn more) you then expand step-by-step on your chord and rhythm knowledge into Blues, Ballad style, Jazz, Ragtime, Improvisation and yes.. even Sight Reading Classical music - - - - - - A note from the author - - - - "I emailed many of my students around the world who had given me favourable reviews elsewhere if they might add a review on Amazon and I wish to thank everyone for the great response. It's great that the course has meant so much to you all."

Yamaha YPG-235 76-key Portable Grand Graded-Action USB Keyboard Review

Yamaha YPG-235 76-key Portable Grand Graded-Action USB Keyboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After having played the Yamaha YPG-535 88-key Portable Grand Piano Keyboard in a showroom and loving it, I was torn, wondering what all I would be missing out on if I went with the more economically priced YPG-235. I now own the 235 and it appears as if I am missing out on twelve keys. That is, I am not experiencing even an ounce of buyer's remorse after opting for the cheaper 235. This is a lovely keyboard with more beautiful voices than I will ever know what to do with and extremely user friendly functionality. Of course, my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt as I will be the first to admit that my experience with other products of this variety is extremely limited. As such, it might be best to say that, for a novice, one could not ask for a better instrument for the price.
So what is the difference between the 235 and the 535? Based on my previous comparative shopping, I have come up with a few differences. First is the obvious fact that the 535 possesses 88 keys, while the 235 has 76. The 535 also includes a stand, sustain pedal, and power adapter, which must be purchased separately for the 235. While I am unaware of the specifics, the 535 also has greater storage capacity and capability as well as a few more voices. Beyond these definitive differences, having now played both models, the 535 also wins out with regard to aesthetics in that it looks and feels to be of a slightly higher quality, from its display to the apparent craftsmanship in assembly.
Why buy the YPG-235? If price is not an issue, go ahead and get he 535, it is a beautiful instrument. However, for those on a budget or for those who simply do not need 88 keys, purchase the 235. Like the 535, the 235 possesses piano style Graded Soft Touch (GST) keys, which are not exactly weighted but occupy that perfect gap between pure synth keys and weighted. The feel is perfect for one who is used to standard synth-style keyboard keys yet longs for a little more control without sacrificing playability. The 235, like the 535, also features USB connectivity and general MIDI compatibility, as well as almost all of the same high quality voices, which separate both the 535 and the 235 from many other models in their price brackets (besides the pianos, the multitude of stringed instrument voices are amazingly realistic). While it is unfortunate that Yamaha decided to not include a power adapter with the 235, the Yamaha Survival Kit D - Accessory Kit for Yamaha YPG-235 & YPG-235 Keyboards which includes a power adaptor, extended warranty, and a couple of other low quality extras can be purchased relatively cheaply. In my opinion, the YPG-235 offers the buyer more bang for their comparative buck. Again, the 235 sounds great, feels great and is hard to beat for the price!
