Play Piano Deluxe v2.0 Review

I bought this program in hopes it would be a piano teacher for me at home. Unfortunately, it kept shutting down every time I clicked on a tutorial video. It said "error, must shut down". I emailed the company, at the website listed, but they never responded. I returned it to the store where I bought it. Another problem with this program was that it seemed to assume you aspired to play in a band. I don't. I just want to learn to play the piano. So, any instruction I was able to access was from a "band" point of view.

Previously, the Kurz SP-76 was the handiest of all quality, professional performer's keyboards, so small that I could carry it to a big band job strapped over a shoulder with an amp in one hand. Its limitation was the absence of any splits, making it necessary to have another keyboard or tone generator on the job for left-hand bass. Moreover, the keyboard was simply time-consuming and frustrating (like many Kurzweils I've owned) to MIDI with another device. The Kurzweil SP2 appeared to be the solution, but it's frankly proven an unexciting instrument to play. The sounds are too few, they lack brilliance and life, some of the sounds--e.g. organ--are too weak to be useful, and the inclusion of "Take 6" sounds is a joke from a performer's (and other musicians') point of view. Moreover, it's a rather cumbersome axe, twice as heavy as the SP76, and prone to misfire when set-ups are switched in the middle of a beat. Finally, I have not been able to get a decent, ringing ride cymbal sound layered to the bass--a feature that has vanished or diminished since my K1000 from 20 years ago, when Kurzweils were still made in Japan (they were bought out by the giant Korean piano maker, Young Chang).
Except for the added cost (the SP-76 would occasionally be as low as $500), the SP4-7 is far closer than any other current Kurzweil to the original SP-76 in size and weight, and it offers the advantage of splits and layering, plus more and better sounds (e.g. vibes), and a full bank's worth of 128 presets (the SP2 had only 64; the SP76, 32). Given the inevitable difficulty of programming even Kurzweil's most basic keyboard (the company has yet to produce a manual of instructions worth its weight), the doubling of preset sounds is in itself a major improvement. It certainly makes me wish I'd waited longer before picking up an SP2.

Kurzweil's SP4-7 is the modern successor to the best selling SP76, which famously combined world-class Kurzweil sound quality with previously unheard of affordability. The updated SP4-7 makes available to more players than ever the same sound set featured in the successful PC3 line of professional keyboards, in an instrument that is slim, lightweight and extremely easy to use. The SP4-7's enclosure is slender, elegant and easy to lift; once set up it leaves the smallest possible footprint, which means that you, not your keyboard, will be in the spotlight. Featuring a user interface that's intelligently designed, allowing you to create splits and layers with the touch of a button; select presets and setups from easy to access category and program buttons; quickly adjust effects parameters; everything is laid out so you can be up and running and making music right out of the box. The keyboard has 128 hand-picked programs taken directly from the PC3 line, it delivers the best in every category of sound, with the renowned Triple Strike Grand Piano, classic electric pianos, lush strings and orchestral instruments, along with top notch basses, guitars, winds, brass, percussion and drums. Its 16-part multi-timbral architecture makes the SP4-7 a powerful tool for writing and recording music in conjunction with an external sequencer or Desktop Audio Workstation. It has everything from flawless concert hall reverbs and crisp delays to powerful distortion and amp simulation effects add another layer of depth and realism that can only be found in a Kurzweil. The most relevant effects parameters have been mapped to the timbre knob, so you can customize your sound without having to dive into menus or manuals.

Yamaha CP300 Stage Piano Review

Good piano sound, plays like a real piano, has good choir sound, the string sounds could be better, especially when blending with the piano. And then there are all the MIDI sounds that I didn't realize came with it, and I still haven't gotten to the bottom of all the features.
I like the way the often-used functions are laid out as buttons, that is a good design and a good implementation.

Like all fine instruments, the CP 300 simply begs to be played. Sit down with one, and the instrument becomes an extension of your hands and your musical imagination. The authentic piano voices and rich expressiveness come alive at your touch, and the sound is big enough to blast through a full band onstage - yet nuanced enough to work magic in an intimate club.Yamaha's extensive experience in crafting fine acoustic pianos helps us in creating the ultimate digital pianos. Our advanced Graded Hammer Effect (GHE) action gives all keys an authentic resistance that increases from the top register to the lower - just as on an actual acoustic piano. Which means that you can naturally pound out thunderous low notes with your left hand and let the fingers on your right dance and fly with the high notes. In crafting the authentic sound of the CP series, we used meticulously recorded stereo samples of top-quality instruments, taken at various playing strengths, and included subtle elements such as String Resonance, Stereo Sustain, and even Key-Off Samples that capture the felt dampers muting the piano strings - providing the most authentic sounding and finely nuanced acoustic piano voices possible. The CP stage pianos are also master keyboard controllers that give you full command of your gear. Play and control external tone generators. Assign different voices to different keyboard sections and create multi-textured layers of sound. Four instrument Zones on the CP300 with panel sliders, let you easily tweak the level of each instrument as you play. You can also freely reassign the sliders and wheels to control other sonic characteristics of your gear, such as sound attack, decay, brightness and filter cutoff. The CP300 features professional quality balanced XLR output connectors. These give you the cleanest, clearest noise-free signal - both for serious recording in the studio, and playing onstage where long unbalanced cables may compromise your sound.

Casio PX110 Privia 88-key Digital Piano Kit with Stand and AC Adapter Review

Casio PX110 Privia 88-key Digital Piano Kit with Stand and AC Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The weighted keyboard feels a lot like a real piano. It is nice to be able to play pipe organ sounds and experiment with combinations of sounds. You can use any two instruments at the same time...Grand piano and strings is wonderful as is Grand piano 2 and electric piano 2. The recorded library is very nice as well. The sound is pretty full on all of them. Not exactly like playing a pipe organ or a piano, but that is not expected on a keyboard.
The pedal plug ins are great. You can plug in to sustain or soft. You can also adjust the tone, loudness, and a host of other things by pressing function and a combination of keys. They have thought of most everything I needed. Also you can use a headset so you can play while others are sleeping!

Native Instruments Alicia's Keys Virtual Piano Review

Native Instruments Alicia's Keys Virtual Piano
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a pianist and a guitarist and I record on my PC as a hobby. I have been looking for a great piano sound plug-in for my PC MIDI sequencer for a long time. The last time I heard a good MIDI piano sound was from perhaps 10 years ago and it was bundled with the Soundblaster AWE 32 sound card. I happened to see an ad for Alicia's Keys in a keyboard magazine, and decided to give it a try.
I am very impressed. I really found what I was looking for. Now this is the signature Alicia Keys sound. Soulful, subdue, velvety, and is great for accompaniment. This is more a "recorded sound" rather than a sound that you get as if the piano were right in front of you. For those of you who are guitarists and are familiar with the Line 6 POD line of guitar amp modeler, that is what I am talking about. If you are looking for the traditional "in your face" piano sound that you get from a typical digital piano I would recommend the New York Concert Piano also by Native Instruments. Again if you were a guitarist, the sound of Alicia's Keys is like that of a Gibson ES-335, while the NY Concert Piano (which really is a Steinway even though it is not officially referred to as such) is like that of a Les Paul.
In any case, I got both and I couldn't be happier.

With ALICIA'S KEYS, Native Instruments has unlocked the door to the R&B chanteuse's studio. The rich piano samples included in this sound library were created from her own playing, recorded in her personal studio in collaboration with her trusted engineer, Ann Mincieli. Together with Mincieli, Danish sample specialist Thomas Skarbye (also known by his company name Scarbee) and impulse response expert Ernest Cholakis, Alicia Keys has created a virtual piano that embodies the soulful, passionate sound that's become her trademark. Add this virtual piano to your studio and Alicia's distinguished playing will grace your next composition.ALICIA's KEYS' instrument samples come from the artist's very own Yamaha C3 Neo grand piano. This unique and hallowed instrument was built to celebrate Yamaha's 100th anniversary in 2002 and represents the very top of the Conservatory Collection line. The exquisite and unique sound of the C3 Neo were painstakingly captured by Thomas Skarbye, KONTAKT script wizard Nils Liberg, and Grammy-award winning engineer Ann Mincieli—making these exclusive Yamaha piano samples available to everyone. Using vintage microphones and preamps and through detailed analysis of Alicia's playing, the team succeeded in capturing the warm, soulful, and inspiring sound of the Yamaha C3 Neo piano all the way down to the finest nuances. Great effort was put into making the ALICIA'S KEYS virtual piano as authentic as possible. Designed with incredible precision, and incorporating subtle details such as mechanical release noises, a specially developed sympathetic resonance and release system, and even the sound of fingers hitting keys (optional), this unique virtual instrument software delivers plenty of lively realism. So much in fact, that Alicia Keys herself used it exclusively on her latest album "The Element of Freedom."

USB MIDI Cable Converter PC to Music Keyboar Review

USB MIDI Cable Converter PC to Music Keyboar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is, by far, the cheapest option right now for a comparable length USB MIDI interface cable: a measly $6. For those who want a straight answer: yes, it works. For me. If yours doesn't, HDE has a great return policy.
PROS:
- Very easy setup, driver installs automatically within seconds
- Windows XP, Vista 32 and 64-bit compatible
- Very cheap, while offering an authentic USB MIDI interface
CONS:
- Cord is a little too short for me--about 5 feet
- High latency. Latency is the time it takes for input from your keyboard to reach your computer, and in my experience the latency for this interface is really high--around a quarter to three quarters of a second. This makes it very hard to play live accompaniment to background music you've created. However, if you disable MIDI playback in your sequencing program and just listen to the notes as they're played on your keyboard, you can shift all of the notes in your program after you've finished and it works just fine. It's a couple extra steps per song, or a couple dozen more dollars for a faster cord :3
- Those lights on the converter are annoying!
NOTES
- When setting up, if you are getting no sound, try switching the MIDI IN/OUT ports on your input device. On Yamaha products, "MIDI IN" goes into the keyboard's "MIDI OUT" port, etc. so you can't just match them up!
