Casio PX-100 Privia 88-Key Digital Piano Review

Casio PX-100 Privia 88-Key Digital Piano
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am obsessed with this keyboard. Why? Because it's the first one that I've seen and played so far that has PERFECT weighting on the keys, beautiful sound, and a GREAT price. This keyboard has been on my wishlist for a while now, ever since I first saw it at Sam's. I just want to reiterate how well Casio has done with this keyboard - While there are a limited range of tones available on the PX-100, there are plenty of features for someone who is like me - If you want the feel of a real piano with the weight of an electronic keyboard, this is the keyboard you want to look at. I just couldn't help but fall in love with the keys on this baby, I've played on keyboards with weighted keys before, but this one just takes the cake - The keys are weighted propertly, they spring back like they should, and the weight is ranged just right - the lower keys are just the slightest bit heavier than the higher end. This thing is a DREAM to play! Featuring midi input/output ports, two headphone jacks, pedal port and everything I've talked about so far, this keyboard is definitely something to look at if you want the warmth and feel of a real piano at the price and portability of an electronic keyboard. I highly reccomend this keyboard!

The slim, lightweight, and overall compact nature of Casio's Privia PX-100 digital piano means you can pack it just about anywhere. When you're not tickling its full 88 keys, you can stash the polyphonic keyboard in a closet, under a bed, or in other compact locations where most digital pianos refuse to fit.The scaled hammer-action keyboard offers touch sensitivity for beautiful piano tones and a feature called New Sound Source which is said to give the PX-100 sound quality to rival that of an actual grand piano. Auto-accompaniment provides exciting, dynamic, and realistic background arrangements for pop, jazz, rock, and a range of the other genres. The PX-100 can provide complete orchestral accompaniment on command, too.Other primary tones (voices) include strings and pipe organ, with 10 total tones. A layer feature allows simultaneous sounding of 2 tones, while a split feature lets you split the keyboard between 2 different tones. Lesson assembles functions that enhance your practice sessions, which you can devote to right-hand part only, left-hand part only, or both hands--whatever requires the most practice. You can also record songs for playback at a later point (up to 5,200 notes). An onboard metronome offers adjustable tempos and beats. Adding effects makes notes sound richer and deeper, and the PX-100 includes 8 effects: 4 reverbs and 4 choruses.Use the built-in music library to learn songs and develop coordination. There are 30 preloaded tunes plus memory storage for 10 downloadable songs. The PX-100's 30 preloaded piece include Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu Op.66, Satie's Gymnopédies 1, Beethoven's "Für Elise" and Sonata Op.27-2 "Moonlight" (first movement), as well as classic songs like "Over the Rainbow," "Someday My Prince Will Come," and "Let It Be."What's in the Box Keyboard, a user's manual, and warranty information.

Schoenhut My First Piano II, White Review

Schoenhut My First Piano II, White
Average Reviews:

I was really let down by this product. My two year old uses it as a sitting bench...yes, it's that small! When she does try to play it she has to sit on her knees and crouch down. It is otherwise really well made and has surprisingly good sound...if it were double the size I would love it...as it is, it simply sits in the corner of the room unused.

Schoenhut's bright 25-key tabletop model is the perfect choice for a toddler's first piano. Encourage your child's musical creativity with a fun and educational musical instrument. My First Piano is an ideal tool for kids developing hand-eye coordination. Chromatically tuned, the lovely chime-like notes are produced by little hammers striking precision-ground, German steel music rods . Schoenhut's patented Learning System, with its play-by-color teaching method, makes playing simple and fun. A removable color strip fits behind the keys to guide small fingers from chord to chord. The chart also works on adult keyboards, since keys on Schoenhut toy pianos are of corresponding width. This teaches children proper "finger stretch" from the very beginning. The accompanying songbook contains a collection of familiar tunes. This Learning System has been specially designed to build a child's confidence and develop basic playing skills.

Carole King - Tapestry - Piano/Vocal/Guitar Artist Songbook Review

Carole King - Tapestry - Piano/Vocal/Guitar Artist Songbook

I have been listening to her "Tapestry" album for years, and always wondered if there was a piano/vocal book. I took a chance on this one, and I am more than pleased! The arrangements are about as exact as you can get to Carole's own playing. All the songs are included, but no extras. I love the album even more now, if that's possible.

Kurzweil SP2XS 88 Note Digital Stage Piano, Hammer Action Keys, 64 Programs, 64 Voice Polyphony, Includes Two 6 Inch Speakers and Stand, Black and Chrome Review

Kurzweil SP2XS 88 Note Digital Stage Piano, Hammer Action Keys, 64 Programs, 64 Voice Polyphony, Includes Two 6 Inch Speakers and Stand, Black and Chrome
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Now that all Kurzweil's can be layered and split, their glaring weakness is all the more conspicuous. The company, in my opinion, makes the best digital pianos--in terms of sound, versatility, and keyboard "feel"--but with the most convoluted, incoherent, least helpful instructions. Guaranteed to lead to many all-nighters for musicians just trying to "set up" the keyboard for the next day's gig, which may not have a bass player or drummer.
If you have q friend, or a knowledgeable techie/gear-head who works cheap, by all means hire him. The manual, as usual, looks like it's been written by a committee. After talking about the most "powerful" dimension of the keyboard as its adaptiveness to set-ups, it fails to explain or illustrate how to construct sounds in the favored "set-up," or "500," mode rather than the more limiting "performance" mode. It gives no directions or helpful illustrations on how the user might be able to use one of the factory set-ups (all of them unusable) as a "template" to help the user with the creation of his own more practical set-ups. It doesn't explain how to transpose a good acoustic bass sound up an octave into a playable range without having all of the notes in the treble, or right hand, also transposed, except into an unplayable range. It provides a paragraph on doing a "hard reset," so that the player can get rid of all the monstrosities he's created and start afresh--unfortunately the manual fails to provide the vital information that before the "reset" button will activate the instructions permitting a hard reset, the user must first depress the "Global" button. (By accident, and several hours later, I finally stumbled upon it.)
Whether the reader finds it merely curious or confounding, the manual will introduce and begin to discuss some of the specifics of splitting, layering, set-up programs, etc. Then in a late section of the book, the reader finds a paragraph stating that the instrument is capable of "layering and splitting, which means adding on another sound or dividing the keyboard into two or more zones so that different sounds can be played, a feature that can often be convenient for a musician, especially one who is playing in a show" (!!!). In other words, the paragraph sounds as though the authors are unaware that anything preceded it. Instead of specific instructions, we're given a reductive introduction that sounds like it belongs in the ad sheet! I's in details like this where Kurzweil seems determined to cut the corners, in the process cutting the frustrated user to shreds.
I could say that this latest Kurzweil gives me more problems when, during the middle of a fast-moving passage in the middle of a tune, I attempt to go from one program to another. Often the button doesn't register my quick press, the light blinks back at me when it should have changed--but for all I know I've programmed it wrong. The same goes for the sustain pedal. It's the slipperiest pedal I have yet to encounter on an electric keyboard. At one time, Roland marketed a pedal with a heel flap, which made eminent sense and was quite effective (enough reason to get rid of it in this inscrutable market). The bottom surface of this Kurzweil pedal is less abrasive than Kurzweil pedals I've had with my K1000, PC2, or PC1se, squirting across a linoleum floor like a hocky puck repeatedly over the course of a 4-hour job (might as well have been 40). Maybe that's the way they like them in Minnesota.

YAMAHA DGX-500 Portable Grand Piano w/ Wooden Bench Review

YAMAHA DGX-500 Portable Grand Piano w/ Wooden Bench
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This instrument is probably the best buy one can get for way under a grand (no pun intended). It includes some really nice sounds, especially the piano sounds, the organ sounds and the flute sounds.
It has some really nice features and bells and whistles (both literally and figuratively) including very good touch. It is not fully weighted, but is still pretty good.
The only problems I have with it is the weight, which prevents it from being totally portable and the tinny sounding speakers. But this are nit picks because both can be overcome easily enough and what you do get more than offsets the losses.
If you want a keyboard that can do a lot of things, has a lot of great pre-set sounds, is pretty nice looking and can be used either for an inexpensive home piano or as a gigging instrument and with a bench, a stand, and way to record your music as well as being useful as a learning instrument, this is the one. it is fully MIDI ready and has a lot more that I have not yet scratched the surface of. And all for way under a thousand dollars.
I don't think there is anything better for an all-in-one keyboard for this level of expense. A great deal, an excellent instrument.

Yamaha's DGX500 is the first portable keyboard to use actual piano keys, and it's the flagship in a series of instruments from Yamaha called Portable Grand. It's packed with functions and features designed specifically for new piano users. Included with the DGX500 is a furniture-type wooden stand that completes its piano image.A large, piano-shaped button in the center of the front panel calls up the keyboard's best piano sound. A piano accompaniment style is automatically chosen and readied if you want it. Next to the piano button is a metronome-shaped button for, of course, a metronome feature. The DGX500 features an extra-high-quality stereo piano sample, general MIDI (GM) compatibility, and a selection of Yamaha's famous XG Lite voices, all of which work in concert to give you remarkably good sound quality. The quality is enhanced by the keyboard's two-way speakers with bass-enhancing ports.Polyphony is the ability for a keyboard to sound multiple tones simultaneously. Some keyboards in this price range have 16-, 24 -or 28-note polyphony; the DGX500 has a full 32-note polyphony so you can play intricate instrumental arrangements and dense musical passages without "running out" of notes or sounds. When you want to record your playing, just press the front panel's record button, the track button for the track you want to record on, and start playing. It's that easy. When you're done, save your song internally or to the keyboard's 3.5-inch floppy disk drive as a standard MIDI file (SMF) to make it compatible with other general MIDI keyboards as well as most computers. Imagine recording your child's first song onto a disk, placing it in your computer and attaching it to e-mail so friends and family can hear.Call up your favorite style of music like Rock, Big Band, Gospel or Country, press a chord or play Single Finger mode, and the DGX500 will follow you through a piece of music, providing all of the drums, bass, piano, guitar, horn and string parts for you. And even though the DGX500 comes with 135 built-in music styles, the disk drive opens up the ability to load even more. The disk drive will allow you to save and organize your favorite data for years to come. Another feature to simplify song playing is the music database. Pull out your favorite music book, select a song from any of the over 200 songs in the database, and the entire keyboard sets itself up. Start playing and the keyboard will follow your every chord--with no other buttons to press. The DGX500 comes with 100 built-in songs with its songbook feature. But if you've never played before, where do you start? Well, if learning to play music is important to you, the Yamaha Education Suite II, a set of music training functions, makes learning music incredibly easy. Seven types of lessons are available as well as a convenient chord dictionary. And finally, no matter what level of playing ability your at, you'll appreciate being able to build combinations of your favorite sounds. Pressing the "Split" button divides the instrument into two parts, allowing you to have two different sounds on the keyboard at the same time, like piano on the right and bass on the left. That's when you really appreciate the 88 keys.In addition, "Layer" mode lets you combine two sounds across the keyboard range. For example, you could layer piano and strings and play both sounds at the same time. With over 600 voices to choose from, the combinations are only limited by your imagination. What's in the Box Keyboard, stand, and a user's manual. Stay comfortable and relaxed while playing your digital keyboard with this Yamaha WB2 bench. Specifically designed to match the DGX505 keyboard but appropriate for a variety of digital and acoustic pianos, the bench is furnished with a thick padded seat and a strategic air vent in the cushion. Combined, the padding and vent support your bottom over long periods while protecting the seat filling from wear and tear. The bench is tough and attractive, too, thanks to its light-grain wood finish and sturdy wooden legs. In fact, its elegant design looks great in everything from Victorian to modern living rooms. It's a particularly good choice for users who value both comfort and portability, as it measures only 22.5 by 19 by 13.75 inches (W x H x D).
The bench comes disassembled but comes together quickly and easily thanks to the included four bolts and assembly tool.

Synthogy Ivory II Grand Pianos Review

Synthogy Ivory II Grand Pianos
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed Ivory Grand II about two weeks ago and I am blown away by the quality of the samples and the sensitivity of the touch. It is difficult to tear oneself away. My personal favorite is the Steinway (German D) although they are all excellent. I use the pianos in standalone mode as well as a plug-in when I run Cubase. I would highly recommend Synthogy's products and I'm planning to go ahead and order The Italian Grand for Christmas. I looked at other manufacturers but this one came out on top. Make sure you buy the iLok or you will not be able to run the application. Also, be warned that it will take a few hours to install - 11 disks (DVD) so at least 50GB to transfer but probably more like 80GB. You will need more than one drive also. I would use a 7200 rpm, eSATA or FW800 connection to the drive where you store the samples. Enjoy!

Ivory II Grand Pianos is the next generation of Ivory piano products by Synthogy. Powered by a new custom engine, the entire line of Ivory virtual pianos features groundbreaking technology, a fresh graphic interface, and further expanded piano sample sets to provide performers and producers with more expressive detail than ever. A host of new piano-centric features have been added to the Ivory II engine. Principal among them is Sympathetic String Resonance, a long sought after but elusive characteristic of real pianos that Synthogy approaches in a completely unique way, realizing the true complexities and subtleties of sympathetic string excitation. This brand new technology does not rely upon triggering additional samples, ordinary sine waves, or recordings in any way. Rather, notes struck that are harmonically related excite the actual complex overtones of the notes that are being held, in the same manner that undamped strings ring in a real acoustic piano. The result is an unprecedented new level of realism.Ivory II also delivers some of Synthogy's most frequent customer requests, with features such as Half Pedaling, Lid Position, Pedal Noise, and Tuning Tables to provide even greater detail and control. Additionally, features like Timbre Shifting, Parametric EQ, and new Synth Layer controls offer powerful sound-sculpting capabilities for custom piano programming and sound design. At the heart of Ivory II are Ivory's legendary pianos. Each Ivory piano, in every Ivory product, has been further refined and developed, including expanded velocity levels (up to 18 per piano), additional soft pedal samples, and more release samples. Synthogy's decades of expertise in piano development, along with proprietary "timbre interpolation" technology combine to deliver greater fidelity, a high-level of playability, and a musical experience like no other. What's new in Ivory II?Synthogy listens to its customers, and has continually updated its Ivory products to meet their expectat

Korg nanoKEY 25 Key USB Controller Keyboard, Black Review

Korg nanoKEY 25 Key USB Controller Keyboard, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Korg Nano Series is, quite simply, among the most useful sets of tools ever produced for the COMPUTER... Let me say that word again: "COMPUTER."
I write, arrange and orchestrate music for a living. The nanoKey, in particular, is a lifesaver! It's portable, so I can stuff it into my laptop bag when I'm on the road. It works seamlessly with Finale, Encore and - my personal favorite - Sibelius (the "Big 3" of notation programs). It isn't as convenient for real-time sequencing, unless you've developed "the touch." It took me a while to get used to that, but I do play scratch tracks in Logic and Sonar, on occasion.
Anyone considering the purchase of this device should realize up front that it isn't really designed for stage performance, etc. It's best suited for computer entry. In fact, it's PERFECTLY suited for computer entry.
...and for fifty bucks it's WAY ahead of anything else!

Yamaha PKBX2 Double X Portable Keyboard Stand Review

Yamaha PKBX2 Double X Portable Keyboard Stand
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had looked at numerous stands for my Yamaha keyboard and didn't want to spend a ton of money for a professional grade stand (at professional prices). With that in mind, the Yamaha PKBX2 Double X Portable Keyboard Stand is a good choice at $29.99. I had seen other stands that were not as sturdy (single X stands)and cost about the same price.
Tips for assembly:
- Don't read the instructions, just look at the enlarged image of the keyboard stand on Amazon and assemble the stand the way it's shown.
- The bolts for attaching the arms and legs come screwed in to the stand. Use the (included )Allen Wrench to remove them and then re-install them when you are putting it together.
PROS:
- Low price.
- Solid, sturdy stand.
- Works for just about any keyboard.
- The stand's height is fully adjustable, and can be easily changed in several seconds - without having to unscrew anything.
CONS:
- There is no way to attach a keyboard to this stand. No screws, bolts or straps are included, even though most (including my Yamaha) keyboards have pre-drilled holes for screwing the board to a stand. The keyboard simply sits on top of the stand. I was VERY disappointed about this.
- The included Allen wrench did not work for one of the bolts. The bolt came screwed in to the stand way too tightly to be removed using the included tool. The Allen Wrench only stripped the bolt, it did not loosen it. Luckily my husband had a better Allen Wrench of nearly identical size, and that one worked. Without it, we would not have been able to loosen the bolt.
