Yamaha SK88 Survival Kit for 88-Key YPG Series Keyboards Review

Yamaha SK88 Survival Kit for 88-Key YPG Series Keyboards
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I thought, "Three year extended warranty? Keyboard Cover?" This sounds great, especially at the discounted price.
I imagined a cover that would cover the "keyboard", the keyboard being the entire YPG-635. I've submitted some user photography to show you what it actually covers, and I see that the user images are already accepted and in the description. The word "Keyboard" has multiple meanings when you talk about an item like this. The whole thing is a keyboard. And the electric piano has a keyboard, the area which the keys are in. In other words, the keyboard has a keyboard. I imagined a keyboard cover that covered the first keyboard.
But then I got the box and opened it, and it seems that what they are covering is the second keyboard, the keyboard part of the keyboard. (Whew!) It is a nice heavy felt cover and it might lay flat after a few weeks. Right now it is a wrinkled felt cover. I have no idea how it would stand up to ironing. Since the edges are pinked (again, see photo) rather than whipstitched or beaded I'm scared to wash or iron or handle it much beyond laying it out and picking it up.
But the most important particular that the product description is wrong in is that the extended warranty only adds one year to the original one year factory warranty for a total of two years. The package insert is very clear about how long my new warranty is and it disagrees with what the item description in Amazon says.
I have yet to look at the DVD that came with it or to use the PC software. If and when I do, I'll publish an addendum to this review. I felt that accurately describing the cover and the length of the warranty would help the most people and that an accurate description was needed quickly. The downgrade to two stars was because of the quality of the cover and the incorrect or ambiguious description. It would have gotten three stars if the description was correct and clear. And, this would further be adjusted by the usefulness of the DVD and software, which I have not yet evaluated.
Were the felt cover of better quality (that is, if it had a beaded edge and if it sat flat) I would be starting this review at 4-5 stars.
OK, I've had time to look at the disks. The DVD that shows you how to use the various features of the keyboard is excellent. The disk of software is pretty much junk. There are 2 lite versions, neither of which run on my Vista system, and some demo versions, none of which I cared about. This is the sort of stuff you can download from web sites for free. I know what a midi device is, and so the short featurette on how to hook up your keyboard didn't mean anything to me - and as far as I can tell, all of the YPG series keyboards use USB hookups, so the extra stuff on usb-Midi adapters just distracted from what you'd need in a SK88 Survival Kit.
I will point out that the Yamaha web site also claimed that the warranty was extended for two years, so if this information was copied from that web site, it disagrees with the contents of the box.
In any case, my 2 star review stands. The cover is still not sitting flat - it looks worse than it did in the photos.

Chirp Virtual Midi Keyboard Controller Review

Chirp Virtual Midi Keyboard Controller
Average Reviews:

I have been looking for a little keyboard application for a while and found Chirp after seeing their ad in electronic musician. Chirp is a nice little keyboard! I am really impressed. I'm running it on a intel MacBook Pro with Leopard and its fast. almost no delay. The manual is first class, better than a lot of $300 programs I have. It has instructions on using it with what looks like every popular music software application I was glad to see Reason was covered which is what I use. Others will probably find this useful as well.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Chirp Virtual Midi Keyboard Controller

Chirp turns your computer or laptop keyboard into a virtual MIDI keyboard controller with 18 piano keys, 10 drum triggers and all the control you'd expect from a piece of hardware. The program produces no actual "sound" itself; instead it produces MIDI notes and messages, which in turn "drive" any music software application, MIDI instrument or plug in soft synthesizer capable of generating sound from MIDI input. Many music software applications and soft synths include some virtual keyboard capability, but very few allow the MIDI notes to be generated using your computer keyboard. Many limit input to a mouse click, which makes chord entry and real-time playing virtually impossible. Chirp accommodates up to 7 notes on the keyboard to be played simultaneously and in real-time, allowing for even complex 9/11/13 chord entry over 2 octaves. Chirp was designed to be a low latency controller capable of both supply MIDI notes and displaying played notes from any music application with MIDI I/O capabilities. We envisioned the primary computer platform as a Windows or Mac laptop, and most likely in a remote environment where the use of a physical keyboard is impractical, such as an airplane seat, bus seat (or even your desk at work!) Chirp Features ...16 Channel Virtual MIDI Input/Output Port (installs via driver on Windows or Mac and appears in any MIDI music host application), Piano Keyboard and Trigger Pads assignable to different MIDI Channels, 18 to 21 notes mapped to computer keyboard keys for generating MIDI data with assignable velocities, 18 to 21 on-screen keys to display incoming MIDI note data, note velocity controlled by graphical slide or preset values assigned to top row number keys, graphical octave control allows access to all 127 defined MIDI notes, 10 trigger pads assignable to any MIDI event (on a different channel than the keyboard keys), and ability to send note data even when Chirp is not the focused application.

Linus and Lucy - Piano Sheet Music Review

Linus and Lucy - Piano Sheet Music

The product was priced about what I expected, close to $4.00, the shipping was more than the product at under $5.00. But I'll spend that much on a lunch out sometimes. My son had been waiting since November for me to get this for him (I promised). When I got it and saw it was NOT folded to fit in a smaller envelope (I was concerned about that) and it looked exactly like one of the two ways I've seen single-song sheet music: Cardstock exterior with loose pages inside, and shipped flat; I was pleased. I've seen accordian folded cardstock sheet music for piano and I would have prefered that, but this was good.

This is just the first one-third of their Piano and Keyboard Method package. It covers the basics of rhythm and reading music. If you're serious about really learning in this manner, you should probably just get the Piano and Keyboard Method version right away. If you're just dabbling and need some help learning to keep time and read music, this is a great place to start (you'll need a MIDI keyboard to get the most out of it). But if you already have a good sence of rhythm and know the basics of reading music, this wont offer too much.

Casio AP24 Digital Home Piano Review

Casio AP24 Digital Home Piano
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great piano for a new student. Overall price/performance is great. It feels a lot like a real piano. Of course, an experienced pianist can feel a difference, but the main goal with buying this instrument was not to spend tons of money and still get a decent piano.
Another great thing about this digital piano is a headphone jack. This is one of the most important advantages of the digital pianos (for those who have to listen :-). Even though we bought this piano for my daughter, I also play it at night using headphones.
The bottom line is if you need to practice playing piano, but don't want to spend a lot of money - this is your best bet. I searched other Web sites, but this one was the best deal.

Akai SYNTHSTATION25 25-Key Keyboard Controller For Iphone And Ipod Touch Review

Akai SYNTHSTATION25 25-Key Keyboard Controller For Iphone And Ipod Touch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love the music apps on my iPod Touch, so jumped at the chance to be able to use a keyboard with one. The Akai synthstation is perfect for when you spontaneously want to play around and not boot up a computer and plug in a controller and audio interface. It reminds me of the grab and go convenience of a casio. A couple of caveats:
1) The Akai Synthstation app has some great sounds but no real time programming. I like the arpegiator but you are relegated to step programming.
2) They scrimp on the cables so you will probably want to order a mini USB cable. Not a big deal, but even my cheapo Korg controller came with a cable.
What really expanded my enjoyment of this device was the NanoStudio app that was recently updated with synthstation support and breathed new life into this device. It is a relatively pricey app but worth every penny. It has four synths and 2 drum sets and imports samples and you can program in real time or step time.
I hope other app developers follow suit, but I am wondering if the iPad is distracting them from developing for this device. Curious to hear other opinions on this.
Overall I consider this $99 well spent!

I proudly own a Hugh Tracey Treble Kalimba. This is a very fine instrument so don't be put off by it's simple design. It is well worth it's price the minute you hold it & play it for the very first time....the best sounding kalimba on the market....anything else is ,in my opinion, an imitation of it, I know, I bought one of "those" too!!!
You have to play one to know what I'm talking about. A finely crafted product...Do I sound like a commercial??? I sing it's praises, but a Hugh Tracey Kalimba "speaks" for itself!

Hugh Tracey Kalimbas are hand made thumb pianos from South Africa, known the world over for their beautiful tone. These instruments are truly authentic both in construction and sound. The Kalimba - depending on the region also called Thumb Piano, Finger Piano, Mbira, Sanza or Likembe - is a wood box on which a collection of metal strips are mounted. The Kalimba is held in the hand or on the knee and the musician plucks the free hanging strips with the thumb or fingers.

As a music director, I bought this for its portability to record concerts in stereo. Just hook it up to a laptop computer (plugs into a USB port) and record away - anywhere! The resulting WAV file is already on the computer ready to tweak in Sound Forge. The stereo sound quality is rich and accurate. We have been very impressed.

MXL Introduces the World's First USB Large Gold Diaphragm Stereo Condenser Mic. It's like having a recording studio in a mic. No mixers, pre-amps, or expensive studio gear. No mixers, preamps or expensive studio gear. No special software or drivers, just plug in to your portable or desktop computer, set your preferences and enjoy instant studio quality recordings. The mic uses dual gold diaphragm capsules in a XY pattern together with low noise electronics and the latest in enhanced digital conversion techniques for pristine audio quality. In a demonstration CD a vintage acoustic guitar was recorded with a famous studio mic going thru high quality studio gear to a hard disk recorder and then was compared to the MXL USB.007 recorded direct to a standard computer. The results were nothing short of amazing; the MXL USB.007 sounded like a pristine direct to disc recording while the studio mic sounded nice but lacked punch or detail of the USB mic. Because of its high quality and ease of use the new mic opens up new possibilities for direct stereo recording with a standard computer such as live performances in the professional, school and home environment. It's also a very exciting tool for podcasts, multimedia, news and broadcast applications using portable computers for remote stereo recording of concerts, lectures, or even documenting outdoor sounds in stereo for film and and sharing with friends and TV backgrounds. Imagine the fun of recording performances and sound effects from anywhere in the world on a portable computer in full stereo and sharing with friends and associates. The MXL USB .007 comes with a carry bag, a desktop mic stand, mic stand adapter, a 10-foot USB cable, wind screen, owners manual and an applications guide. Yamaha 88-Key Touch-Sensitive Piano-Style Light-Weight Keyboard - DGX505 Review

Yamaha 88-Key Touch-Sensitive Piano-Style Light-Weight Keyboard - DGX505
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So I'm 19 living in a dorm room on campus. I figured the Clavinova was way too steep on my pockets. I played piano once upon a time, but never took lesssons really. I was attracted to the price of this keyboard and the fact that it was actually full-size. Being sick and tired of my 61-key keyboard, I figured I'd go seek out shopping for a better one and one that is full size.
I don't know digital pianos too well but from experience I've noticed that Yamaha and Roland were pretty formidable with their products. I wouldn't have given a second look to the other brands. I've tried this product out at a store some time ago several times before actually thinking about buying it. I thought it was very nice for a consumer based instrument.
After reading reviews and what not, I was determined then that I would put serious thought into buying it. One minute later I was already pulling out my card to pay for this online. After receiving the product, I was faced with an even bigger burden... carrying it back across campus to my dorm room.
So the package was pretty big. Makes for a good workout if you plan on carrying it back to your home. The contents were packed nicely. The stand was very easy to setup too. Being a computer freak, I have the keyboard sitting next to my computer. The whole USB interface was another thing that turned me on about the keyboard. Little did i know how great it would become when I actually connected it to my computer. The software was easy to use. I can transfer MIDI files to the keyboard via USB and store them on little memory cards.
The thing boasts about how you can take midi files and have them display the sheet music on the LCD screen. I thought that was nifty and all, but I would never use that feature. I'd rather have a software included that'll put the midi file on sheet music ready to be printed.
The "Digital Music Notebook" is a very awesome utility in my opinion. I found it to be so good that I'd place my computer monitor on where my sheet music would go on the keyboard whenever I'm using it with my keyboard (thank goodness it isn't CRT!). So you can use this notebook software to buy/download sheet music digitally. I thought it was pretty lame that you can only print it once (I understand a good few digital sheet vendors do it this way too). Nonetheless, after buying the sheet music, you can view it through the software and have it blow up on your monitor so you can see it full size. You can also make the software play the sheet music (it'll play through your computer or you can configure it to play through the keyboard). A cool thing about it is that you can turn on the learning mode through that software and it'll control your keyboard for it (i.e. there's a learning mode where the song'll play and wait for you to hit the right keys before moving on.) It'll display what keys you need to hit through the software and show you what key's you hit. I thought this whole digital notebook software interface thing was very well done. I thought that the USB interface was solely used for transferring MIDI files.
Though I'm not too much of a piano purist, I think the default piano sound is very nice. This thing holds like over 400 different types of sounds (instruments, voices, sound effects). To be honest, I would rather have them spent more time on perfecting the piano sound, eliminate all other preset voices/styles/songs on the keyboard, and just have it play that one piano sound.
Now, some of the gripes I have with the keyboard.
The sustain pedal isn't all too great. It works fine, but it doesn't really have the feel I'd like it to have. I'm not too whiny about it though to make me want to buy a sustain pedal they sell separately that's made to look like a real piano pedal. The pedal that comes with the keyboard serves its purpose though. If I knew this before buying the keyboard, I would've still bought it anyway.
The piano keys are not weighted. Looking at the picture, one can see that the keys are "fully" shaped like a piano rather than have spaces underneath the keys that the low-end keyboards have. I kinda accidently assumed that it was weighted because of the way they looked. This was back before I test drove it at a store. Playing on a keyboard is much different than playing on a piano. It'll be easier to adjust to a keyboard from a piano than vice versa. If anything, this is probably its biggest weakness in my opinion, but I guess to keep a piano at this price with such a feature wouldn't be too possible.
Overall, I think this digital keyboard is great. Travelling with it isn't bad either if you wish to travel with it. The keyboard has inspired me to practice the instrument more versus the 61-key instrumental junk I had before.
If you're a college student who enjoys playing the piano. I'd recommend this keyboard if you have the room in your dorm. This keyboard is worthy enough for enduring hours and hours of practicing songs and worthy enough if you want to seranade to a special someone or perform for a group (travel friendly once you have the keyboard bag, especially since you won't need to necessarily carry an amplifier with you since speakers are built-in or you can plug one in if you wanted to). It has a 32-note polyphony, but I don't think I'd even go that far. It's nice to know that you have that sort of leaway.
If you're a parent who has a kid growing up and you want them to learn piano, I probably wouldn't recommend this keyboard because of a lack of weighted keys. At that point, I think it would be more advantageous to invest in a Yamaha Cavinova, a Roland Digital Keyboard, or simply a real piano.
This has probably been the best consumer based keyboard I've used. If I were to get a new keyboard in the future, It'll be ranged between $1500-2000. I probably wouldn't be one who'd jump to buy the DGX-506 (if it were to hypothetically come out). For the price range, I couldn't imagine another keyboard that can compete with the DGX-505.

Audio Technica AT2041 Studio Microphone Package Review

Audio Technica AT2041 Studio Microphone Package
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We're using in a church worship service, one for picking up spoken voice and one for picking up an acoustic guitar and variously also our children's choir.
Both microphones work excellently, have nice clear noise-free sound, pick up even children's voices quite nicely without having to overdrive the sound system, and appear to be fairly solidly built.
My only disappointment with them is the AT2020 side-address condenser - I thought that it work as a mic from either side, but it is unidirectional. There was nothing in the advertising telling me that it should work from both sides, it was just an assumption I made, which assumption comes from the fact that I know very little about microphones. Perhaps it's a known fact that "side-address" means one side only, I don't know.
I don't offer that as a complaint, only as a helpful guide in case someone else who doesn't know much about microphones is wondering how it works.
As I said, sound-quality-wise, these are both wonderful, and we're getting another set for the church.
