The pianos are amazing!! I have no need for the bass or drums, but they also sound great. I have been writing music with Reason 2.0 to 3.0 for years and love its intuitive layout and functionality. This premium edition is a GREAT deal for those of you who want some very real sounding piano, bass, and drums. The already included samples with the Reason program itself are also pretty amazing for the price.
For the amount of diversity in sound and effects this program is the easiest programs to learn how to use.
I love it and use it everyday.

SmartScore X Pro Edition Review

SmartScore X Pro Edition

As a choir director and pianist, I use SmartScore almost every day in my work, mostly for transposing to accommodate the range of my singers. It has become sort of indispensable to me like my car or dishwasher. At first I was intimidated and met with some frustrations early on, but it didn't take long to get the swing of it. It does everything I need it to do and I am still discovering clever editing features. The other day I came across the "Auto format" feature which cleans up note spacing and centers the music so when I print out the final score, it looks even better than the original music I scanned in. I am grateful for the continued improvements the company has made with this software. Earlier versions were not as accurate and had bugs. This latest version is extremely accurate fast and, for the most part, trouble free. I love it.

EastWest Ministry of Rock Virtual Instruments Collection Review

EastWest Ministry of Rock Virtual Instruments Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the past, I would spend hours trying to make other guitar sample sets sound realistic. I tried some that sounded decent, but they were lacking the "oomph" of today's rock, and I still had to fight to keep them from sounding synthesized. Enter Ministry of Rock. Rythmn guitar? Instantly realistic chords that flow together almost seamlessly, with meaty muted chunks. Solos? Great sounding ones can be pieced together with minimal effort. It's like a dream.
Drums (especially the Ludwig set) are powerful and deep. And as for the basses... well, if there's anything that MoR has taught me, it's that there's a HUGE difference between a recorded bass, and a bass that's been recorded (and played!) properly. The basses offer nearly as much flexibility as the solo guitars, and have more than enough energy to hold their own.
I haven't gotten too much into the included acoustic, but from fooling around with it on the keyboard, it seems extremely playable, with an absolutely massive number of chord variations (flats, sharps, etc). It's chords only, but Gypsy has a plucked version that matches up nicely, if you find it necessary.
If there's one thing I have to complain about (and it's more of a minor quibble), it's that the guitar chords are limited to a single range of tuning on the guitar. I would have liked to have had some extra samples with the guitar detuned a bit, for some lower-range sounds.
As the reviewer below mentioned, it does require a seperately purchased iLok key (which can store a hundred or so registration codes), but that comes with benefits of it's own, such a license portability. So it's either a pro, or a con, depending on how you look at it. I run it at home as well as work, so it's a great bonus for me.
All that aside though, Ministry of Rock is definitely my new sample set of choice.

Songwriters, film, TV, and game composers as well as drummers and guitarists will find this library fun and useful. It features great sound quality and playability. The Ministry of Rock collection features sounds used in today's popular music and the entire library was created with one goal in mind: to create a virtual instrument capable of producing sounds that could actually produce a hit record or film score without any live drum, bass, or guitar overdubs. Articulations and programming was all reverse engineered from actual performances.PLAYPowered by EastWest's PLAY 64-bit (and 32-bit) Advanced Sample Engine with built-in Network Control (plug-in or standalone), this virtual instrument combines intuitive handling with excellent sound quality, and functions as a plug-in instrument, without the need for a sampler. It includes impulses from the same hall the producers used to record Symphonic Orchestra and Symphonic Choirs so the pianos can blend smoothly with those collections.Load more thanks to 64-bit support64-bit support allows you to load many more instruments and voices, limited only by your system RAM (32-bit support is included also)While most high-end computers will support 16GB, a very small set of high-performance enterprise computers (with Microsoft Vista Ultimate) can already use 128GB of RAM. Ivory II: Italian Grand Review

Ivory II: Italian Grand
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just received my copy of Ivory's Italian Grand II and I am very impressed with the sound and sensitivity of this instrument. I also own Ivory Grands and my favorite among those (Bosendorfer, Steinway, Yamaha) is the Steinway. My setup is Mac-based. I have a Mac Pro set up with a striped RAID array for video and Ivory pianos and I use an EMU 404 USB for the MIDI input. I use Bose headphones for playback.
The Italian Grand II blew me away. I will be spending many hours recording on this piano. The sound is magnificent. I have been waiting for 15 years for the technology to get this good. I am not sure if I will get better results from my 7ft 6inch Kawai grand but I will have fun comparing them. If you enjoy playing piano and you have a decent computer setup (external firewire 800 drive or eSATA or RAID array, 2GB RAM (or more) and dual processors) and MIDI keyboard, this product is a no-brainer. You're going to have fun - I guarantee it!
Rumor is that this is a Fazioli and I would not be surprised. I played a Fazioli once in a store and it is exquisite. This makes you want to take out all your music out and settle in for the day! Fantasic value!

Giardinelli Universal Klip-Light Review

Giardinelli Universal Klip-Light
Average Reviews:

Stand light
This lamp is made by Wiese Mfg. Co., Davenport Iowa. They call it the "Universal Klip-Lite".
From what I see other musician's using, this seems to be the most popular stand light on the market. That doesn't mean it's the best, just the most used.
Pros:
- Accepts a wide variety of incandescent bulbs, such as tubular showcase bulbs from 20 to 60 watts or a 40-watt appliance bulb. A 13-watt compact florescent bulb also fits, in which case the metal shade won't get hot. A 40 watt incandescent bulb provides good lighting for two pages of music in an otherwise dark room. 25 watts may not be bright enough if you're 55 or over.
- Clips onto any of the "black" stands, such as the Manhasset or Hamilton, and stays put with its strong spring. Can even be used on some of the cheaper folding stands if there is enough for the clip to grab.
- Fully adjustable for lamp angle, height, and distance from music shelf.
- I've had two of these for over 20 years, and a switch has never failed.
- Not expensive.
Cons:
- Poor design of lamp head pivot point mechanism results in the lamp eventually drooping or slipping down. Tightening the pivot screw fixes it for awhile, but it invariably loosens again. Repeated tightening over time will bend the metal parts. If it droops when you're at a gig or rehearsal, you'll wish you had the tools with you to tighten it.
- Mount this light on a stand (e.g., a Manhasset), and a standard music folder no longer fits.
- Minor issue: the cord at the lamp end is a bit in the way, as it comes directly out of the bulb-socket, instead of out of the rear of the lamp. Also, the cord should be at 8', rather than 6'.
See Customer Images to see how I fixed these problems.
Summary:
Gets the job done, but it needs improvement; and a customer should not have to immediately modify a product to fix design defects.

For the price (I paid $99) I give this program 5 stars. I will eventually buy Miroslav Philharmonic and more IK stuff because I like this plug-in so much.
I've heard more than one person say that the activation process is very difficult---I had no such problem. Well, I did have one problem, but it turned out to be my fault---as usual. However, I have some company IT experience. But like I said, for me the process was way easy.
The sounds are the best I've heard for the price; looks cool, as well. This plug-in has a lot of nifty options to mess around with. It woks 99.9% perfect in my Sonar Producer. I've never had a program of any kind work at a 100%. It's an instrument, and like an instrument it has its own little quirks---just like Fenders and Gibsons do. Practice-practice-practice!
For reading musicians this program is especially great. It orchestrates excellently. Very well done!
It's great for ANY serious musician though---amateur or pro.

MXL V67Q Stereo Condenser Microphone Review

MXL V67Q Stereo Condenser Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this microphone to record piano music, chamber music and choral concerts. This is a serious professional microphone at a very reasonable price. It is stereo, and requires phantom power, which right away limits the devices you record on. You basically have to use pro equipment. It comes with a 5 pin stereo XLR connector cable which is only 10 feet long, You can get longer 5 pin stereo XLR connectors from musiciansfriend, Amazon or B and H photo/video. I use a Marantz CDR-300 recorder, but you could also use a marantz 310, any digital multi-track recorder or pro-tool/mac/digidesign interface box setup. (just make sure the interface box has two XLR inputs). The advantage to using a stereo mike is that it only requires one stand and one cable, and this mike sounds fantastic. You do have to back up from whatever you are recording, because it is very sensitive. Watch your levels when you are recording. It records the entire frequency spectrum, very quiet mike, but also very sensitive, you will hear every sniff and cough. It is a neutral mic, warm enough, and doesn't have a digital "edge" to it. I'm very happy with it. The color scheme is a little loud (I call it my Notre Dame Leprechaun Bling-Bling microphone) but once you get past that, it's a serious piece of electronic recording hardware. My previous microphone was a $200 Sony ECM-957 and I've also used a Rode NT-4 (~$600) this is as good as the Rode, but at one third the price. The MXL V67Q is the same price as the Sony but much better, wider spectrum, more neutrl and quieter. You should get a shock mount (I use the MXL 57) and a good tripod (I have an On-stage tripod, the end of the tripod accepts the MXL 57 shock mount). In summary, you can't do much better than this if you are trying to record classical music in a live venue with a digital recorder that has phantom power and XLR connectors. Highly recommended. for more info, go to www.mxlmics.com.

MXL is proud to announce the newest addition to the V67 series, the V67Q Stereo microphone. This mic is the perfect addition to the home recording or studio environment. A fixed 90 degree XY pattern delivers a spacious stereo image, but also minimizes loss when translating to mono. The width can be adjusted later with panning if desired, as the left and right signals are delivered on separate balanced XLR connectors. The open tonality of the microphone compliments close micing by capturing the natural reverb of a room, provides an easy solution for drum overheads, and fits nicely under the lid of a grand piano. RODE NT1000 Vocal Condenser Microphone Review

RODE NT1000 Vocal Condenser Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I went shopping for a Rode NT1. Rode mics use superb capsules mounted in machined housings you could drive a truck over, and the NT1 is a great mic for male vocals. The guy at the store suggested the NT1000. I recorded myself on both, and there wasn't much difference, but the 1000 just sounded a little smoother. But, the NT1 had a painted finish (may have changed since), made out of aluminum. When you screw the mount on it feels rough, like screwing in a light bulb with an aluminum base. The NT1000, though, feels rich and expensive, a nickel-steel finish (I guess) more like the expensive Neumanns. And when you screw the parts together they feel precise and elegant. It was a hundred bucks more than the NT1, but with the slightly nicer sound, and the much nicer look and handling feel, it seemed worth it.
The only problem I've had with it is weight. It's fairly heavy, and can't be extended very far on my boom stand without falling over.
Great dynamic range, low noise, very detailed.

Sony ECM-MS957 Stereo Microphone with Rotating Mid Capsule Review

Sony ECM-MS957 Stereo Microphone with Rotating Mid Capsule

I bought this mike for use with my minidisc recorders, mainly to record choral concerts at church and in other places. It has a nice stereo directionality and separation choices, but I advise you to watch your record levels or mike sensitivity setting because the sound levels tended to overload on loud passages or with percussive music like piano when used with my recorder's default (high) mike sensitivity setting.
It's very solid and well made. I'd rather have a boxed carrying case instead of the soft pouch provided, but that's a quibble.

Propellerhead Reason 4.0 Recording Software Review

Propellerhead Reason 4.0 Recording Software
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Reason Version 4.0 - Mac - Review 9-15-2008
In order to give a meaningful review of Reason 4.0 and the major improvements in this latest version of Propellerheads' music creation software package, I first need to state exactly what Reason is, and what it is not.
The most descriptive definition of Reason is that it is basically a "virtual rack mount studio", complete with a built in sequencer, faithfully simulated in a single software package.
For those who are familiar with rack mount studio units, Reason incorporates most (if not all) common hardware rack mount units you would find in a typical recording studio. This includes mixer boards, effects processors (such as reverb, distortion, chorus and flanger units, etc.), two very robust digital samplers which can use samples and wave files as instrumental components, a drum sequencer, a drum sequence sampler/playback tool, and several analog synthesizer units as well - and much, much more. Each of these devices can be "cable patched" into one another within Reason in almost any conceivable combination, and all of the units look and act like their hardware counterparts would in an actual recording studio.
Also, you can "create" as many of these virtual hardware components as you need and the only limitation you have on how many you can effectively use is limited only by your computer's processor speed, RAM, and the sound card hardware in your computer. Since Reason 4.0 uses software to simulate the functions of these virtual hardware units, having a high-end soundcard is NOT necessary to get the most out of the Reason package. Any decent PC or Mac sound card or chip is capable of getting near perfect sound quality out of this package - even the basic sound hardware found in a standard off the shelf Mac laptop such as the MacBook Pro will do just fine.
As a digital music creation platform, Reason has been very good for years, with one noticeable feature missing: The ability to record "live" instruments, such as guitars or vocals.
While this lack of live recording ability has always made Reason a questionably "complete" DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software package, what it lacks in recording capability it more than makes up for by what it does best: Be a one-man-band/studio in a single box. For those who are already using another software package such as CakeWalk Sonar Studio for live recording, Reason does have the ability to be "rewired" into other packages that support rewiring, such as Sonar. As an add-on component to other DAW software packages, Reason adds a some huge capabilities to other programs and can more than stand on it's own for creation of any conceivable type of electronic music from hip hop to classical to jazz and far beyond.
If you are looking to do a lot of live instrument recording, you might want to look at another software package, but if you are doing something "instrumental", say composing a music piece for a television commercial, look no further. Reason has you covered - in a very big way.
This basic description of Reason as a "one stop recording studio" was accurate for version 2.5. While Reason Version 2.5 was very robust, there were several features that were noticeably missing:
- The ability to easily combine samplers or synths into "layered" instruments (more than one type of sound being controlled by a single sequencer track)
- A coherent and robust piano roll / track view with typical visual components (e.g. as found in other DAW packages such as Sonar)
- A mastering suite of tools for controlling final mix down of tracks into a final polished and well engineered song
- The ability to change tempo within a music project by measure
- A very robust and complex synthesizer capable of producing a huge range of different sounds
Starting with the last drawback first, Reason 2.5 and 3.0 contained 2 main synths: The Subtractor Analog synth and the Malstrom Graintable synth. Reason 4 also still contains these two instruments. While these two synths were plenty capable of producing a host of "vintage" style synths sounds, they lacked the kind of customization that can be found in other high-end digital music packages such as Apple's Logic audio software, making music such as "trance" or "techno-electronica" style music incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to do in Reason. This has now changed in a radical way for the better. More on that in a minute...
Reason 3.0 was a huge step in the right direction for Reason users. There were two major advances in Reason 3.0:
- The addition of a FULL suite of recording and mastering tools including a parametric EQ unit and a compressor unit, (among others). The mastering suite units were a huge leap forward for Reason because they allowed composers to control exactly how a finished song should sound - and even how individual instruments within the song should sound - and these units also greatly reduced the occurrences of audio-clipping which can ruin a digital recording. As with all other Reason "hardware units" the user has the ability to create and use as many mastering units as needed for any given project, limited only by processor speed and the amount of RAM in the user's computer.
- The addition of a new rack unit called the "Combinator". The Combinator was another giant improvement on the Reason package because it allowed users to "group" any other kinds of Reason units into 1 "package" or "group" and then assign the entire group to a single sequencer track. This meant that a user could now throw a mixer, some effects units, and several instruments into 1 package and treat the entire package as a single instrument from within the sequencer. Obviously, this stretched Reason's sound producing capabilities much further and allowed the user to create multi-layered polyphonic instruments with ease.
Reason 3.0 was a great leap forward, for sure, but there were still the problems of having a somewhat limited synthesizer capability (there were still only the 2 synth units, and Reason was still fairly limited in that respect), you still couldn't change tempos mid song (you were pretty much stuck with one time signature per song) and the sequencer still had several problems that made it difficult, frustrating and often time consuming when working within the sequencer itself. With respect to the sequencer issues, there were several other problems, but rather than go into all the details of what was still wrong with Reason 3.0, let's just get to the new version of Reason: Reason Version 4.0 and go over how any and ALL drawbacks of Reason 3.0 are now completely eliminated in Reason version 4.
Reason 4.0 is probably the first version of Reason that has finally eliminated any and all potential weaknesses with this software package, and Reason 4.0 is truly a devastating creative tool for musicians looking for full-featured music creation, recording and engineering package for less than a thousand bucks. This is especially true if you are looking to do any kind of techno, trance, or industrial music as the new "Thor" polyphonic synthesizer utterly SLAYS anything previous versions of Reason had in terms of synthesis of sound or synchronized sequences of sound.
Probably the biggest instrumental leap forward for Reason 4.0 is the addition of the "Thor" Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer as a new instrument found only in Reason version 4.0. The Thor synth is an amazing piece of "virtual hardware" that allows the user to create literally thousands (if not millions) of possible combinations of sound generators, oscillators, filters, envelope controls, and even automated or hardware controlled sound parameters, which can handle almost any aspect of sound generation. While Reason 4.0 ships with a fairly decent amount of Thor "instruments presets" pre-created, these prefabricated presets really only scratch the surface of what Thor is truly capable of.
When the sequencing hardware found within Thor is combined with various parameters of the Thor sound generators and controllers, Thor completely blows away any kind of synth found in previous versions of Reason, and now the Reason software package has the capability of producing the deep and complex types of sounds and sequence loops that are often only found in hardware synths costing nearly two thousand dollars or more. The sequencing generator in Thor can be used to create delays, arpeggios, small instrumental sub-sequences and all other manner of complex sound effects found in a lot of high-end keyboard synths, and this places Reason 4.0's synth sound generation and control squarely in Apple's "Logic" audio software territory as well as now putting Reason 4.0 on the same turf as higher end Korg and Roland keyboard workstations. By using Thor in combination with Reason's Combinator and the already built-in digital samplers, the sky is no longer the limit for sound creation in Reason. The Thor Polyphonic Synth is a HUGE addition to Reason version 4.0 and alone is well worth the price of admission by itself, but Reason version 4.0 doesn't stop there.
The second, and another very significant upgrade to Reason version 4.0 is that all of the previous drawbacks of the Reason 2.5/3.0 sequencer have been completely eliminated in version 4.0.
Like previous versions of Reason, you can color-code your track labels with a right click on the track header. You can now toggle between track view and sequence piano roll view with a single mouse click; each of the tracks can now be viewed with the sequence elements (such as note placement in the piano roll now visible in track view as well) as well as effects controllers and note properties fully visible with a mouse click or two...Read more›

All of the keys work. However, using the item still takes some getting used to. The keys and the space bar have to be depressed with vigor. That causes multiple spaces along with multiple letters that have to be corrected which slows my typing. But since they damned near gave me the product I have no room to complain. What the Hell, I can't type that well any way.

SmartScore X Midi Edition Review

SmartScore X Midi Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this MIDI version (very unique software). It does one thing -- convert sheet / book music to MIDI format file. I then use the MIDI file in Band In A Box and that is why the SmartScore software shines in my book.
It takes some self-learning. The documentation is terrible and written by a 3rd-grade non-American using severely broken Engrish. You can figure it out if you have the persistence. It really has more settings than you need as far as I'm concerned (feature-bloat) -- seems like the settings could be done on the 'finished' MIDI side instead of making it a 'requirement' before scanning your music.
All in all -- I'm satisfied except for the documentation.

Scan & Play! There is simply no faster way to get printed music into your computer. Scan in sheet music with up to four staves per system (4 joined parts), play back then save the MIDI file. SmartScore's SmartScan interface operates almost any scanner and adjusts each setting automatically. No guesswork or expertise required. SmartScore recognizes more musical symbols more accurately and more quickly than any other music-scanning product. Nuances written into scores are accurately captured resulting in astonishing playback realism. Use the fully integrated notation, MIDI piano-roll and MIDI list editors to correct mistakes and easily make changes to your music. Instantly add or create multiple drum patterns with the Auto-Drum Groove to enhance the playback. Recognize PDF files from the Internet and send finished MIDI files to your favorite notation, sequencing package or to your friends. SmartScore MIDI Edition is more than a powerful tool; it's also a lot of fun!

M-AUDIO Keystation 88 Full Size 88-Note Keyboard ( Windows PC / Mac ) Review

M-AUDIO Keystation 88 Full Size 88-Note Keyboard ( Windows PC / Mac )
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
this is the best 88 key controller I've used for all-around features in the sub$1000USD market. they keys aren't wobbly or cheap as another reviewer suggests, they feel like just about any other weighted synthesizer keyboard. velocity control can be tweaked to use different velocity curves, and the knobs, buttons, sliders, etc can all be assigned to custom midi messages. the editor software is not simple to use for a beginner, but allows alot of flexibility. I cannot comment on it's usb functionality as I have it connected to a midi timepiece.
I use this as my main controller in my "Budget" 20k studio. works great for just about everything that it's intended to do.

Willis A Dozen a Day Mini Book Review

Willis A Dozen a Day Mini Book
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A Dozen a Day is great supplemental book for any piano student. I have almost all of my students using various levels of the series, and I find that it aids not only in developing technical skill, but also in reinforcing music reading skills. I can't say that it's entirely realistic to think that a typical student will actually play a dozen of these exercises each day, but I do think that any number of them played regularly proves beneficial.

Pyle-Pro PKST60 Folding Keyboard Bench (Double Braced, Adjustable Height) Review

Pyle-Pro PKST60 Folding Keyboard Bench (Double Braced, Adjustable Height)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ended up sending this bench back. It definitely shouldn't be used on carpet, but that is the least of its issues. The holes were not drilled correctly, one of the screws was missing, and the seat never did fit correctly. Thankfully I kept the box and was able to send it back. Went for a more traditional 4 legged bench and we are loving it. We use it with a keyboard.
